OSM maps on the 1030

Frequently traveling to other countries, I've been downloading the openfietsmap tiles and putting them on the SD card in my 1000 .. they show up and can be turned on and off in the "maps" function of the profile .

On the 1030 using the same SD card they do not show up at all in the device menu .

Is there something I'm missing ?
  • Great. Good to hear a success story!

Openmtbmaps. I just purchased an Edge 1030. I have been using an Edge 705 for almost 10 years. As I am an MTB rider I like a lot Openmtb maps; I tried to install them on an SD on 1030 but they are not al all detected, even though the SD seems to be seen.
(I have a Mac and I use Garmin MapInstall)
I installed them directly on internal memory (but I don't like it because I am scared to destroy the content) and they WORK fine.
The SD I used is an old one, rated 1 GB. Today I will try with a bigger, newer one.
I will post here results. If you have any comment, please let me know
  • Are you sure they work fine?

I have them installed, and in real life (routing a couse of 40km) they do not work fine at all. Extremely slow, routing problems, etc.

If they work fine for you, what are your navigation settings on the 1030??

Truly speaking, I haven't used them yet on a real ride. I will report soon.

It is possible to install map garmin city navigator in 1030 ?
  • That is image is from the file system on the Card. I did not make any of the directories.

When the Edge is connected to the PC does the card also show?

Try placing a blank formatted card in the Edge and see what the Edge does in terms of creating directories. If it does nothing go to the the data recording option under the system settings and switch the recording option to use the card. Once all the directories are created you can switch it back.

    Hi Guru

glad to see you helped dallascyclist! I'm having similar problem.... and I'm not very smart, so would appreciate any additional granularity. I've done such mapping for years on my old Garmin 705. It just works. But not on the new 1030....

    - Garmin 1030 is one week old. Running latest software 5.00
    - Installed a new Sandisk 64GB microSDXC card. When installed in Edge the card is visible in Windows explorer as Drive E. (Edge is Drive D)
    - I created from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ initially one, then later a second, different map (with fewer tiles) and loaded them onto the SD card. For one of these files I retained the name gmapsupp.img. On the other I gave it a different name.
    - During troubleshooting I have reformatted the card exFAT. The 1030 did not add any directories to the reformatted card, including after multiple reboots of the device
    - I have switched the recording option to use the card. Still no Garmin directories created on the card. Including after reboot.

I wonder whether to "force" the Edge to add the directories to the SD card I have to go for a bike ride to generate a record onto the card? I'll try this later today.
Is there something else I need to do to force the Edge to create the directories?

    All help appreciated!!
  • OK, thanks! That fixed it. Took me awhile to figure out how to reformat to FAT32, but then discovered the excellent free tool at http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm. I left him a Paypal donation for such a quick and easy tool.
  • That was the magic .. Having those directories. which were created when I set the "save to SD card" on.

1030 now finds and loads the maps just like the 1000

    Thanks all

I'm also having this problem, so I'm wondering if I have done something wrong. I formatted the SD card to FAT32, and set to save to SD Card, and it created all the directories. I then put the maps in the GARMIN folder, but I still do not see the maps - have I done something wrong?

The files you copied were *.img files?

Maybe, you might also need to enable the map of the unit.
