USB mass storage mode working only seconds

When I plug in the 1030 (Windows 10) it sees the mass storage mode only briefly. A second, no more. I tried different USB cables, different USB ports. Tried a factory reset.

Other garmin devices (Oregon 750 and fenix 5 for example) work fine.

The device shows that it is in mass storage mode, and the drives appear in windows - but trying to access them results in an endless loop, no contents is being shown.

Is this a known issue? Or do I need to get it replaced?
  • See if the following helps

    Force to Mass Storage -
Turn unit off. Hold the lap/reset button while plugging the unit into the USB. Continue holding the lap/reset for 30 seconds and the unit should go to mass storage.

  • I already tried that. The unit itself is in mass storage mode. (The nearly black screen with the computer icon on it)

After leaving my station, the device seemed to re-appear after minutes.

So it connects for a second, then hangs, and finally functions 'normally' after a few minutes.

Does it work correctly for anyone here using Windows 10?

(The exercise was futile in any case, I tried to install OpenMTBMap ... but it doesn't work on the edge 1030)
  • I have not tried this since upgrading to version 3.4 but for version 3.2 I did not have any issues with this. I created a course on strava and dragged it into the new files directory and the 1030 handled it as expected. Are you having the issue with 3.2 or 3.4. When I do connect to my PC my unit seems to attach, then detach then reattach (based on beeps from my PC). I see this with other devices as well sometimes. It sounds like yours is going through those same steps but at a brutally slow pace.
  • Yes, indeed. I am on v3.4.

The fault seems to be on the Edge's side - other garmin devices function normally and immediately after plugging them in.

By the way, when I mean 'minutes' - I actually mean 7 minutes. That's an unusual long time for connecting a single USB device.
  • I’ve encountered this on one computer (and / or USB cable) and not on another.

The same problem occurs with me. After 10 minutes, the Edge 1030 (V. 3.40) is correctly installed in Windows Explorer (Win10 64bit). And only then does the connection in the Garmin Express last.

    Really annoying!

    Update:
My problem I solved. Look here:

    https://forum.garmin.de/showthread.php?75943-Edge-1030-wird-zu-sp%E4t-(-gt-5-min)-von-Garmin-Express-erkannt-wenn-%FCberhaupt&p=322809#post322809
  • Same here. Drives me nuts. Reinstalled Garmin USB drivers with no result. Edge works fine on old desktop Win 7 32 bit.
  • This still is not resolved, not after hard-resetting the device, not after removing all USB garmin drivers and reinstalling them again.

One thing I did find is that on another W10 computer, it does work. I know the easy solution would be to say there is something wrong with my current computer or installation, but ALL other devices, including a Fenix 5 and Oregon 750 work without problems so that is not a conclusion I'm prepared to make. There is something in the 1030 firmware that makes it behave differently.

There are a number of log entries in the windows log:

    1) A driver package which uses user-mode driver framework version 2.23.0 is being installed on device SWD\WPDBUSENUM\_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_GARMIN&PROD_GARMIN_FLASH&REV_1.00#0000EBB6BCC7&0#{53F56307-B6BF-11D0-94F2-00A0C91EFB8B}.
