Edge 1030 round trip routing & trendline popularity routing not working as it should

Hello,

I only practice MTB. I changed my Edge 820 for an Edge 1030 and i'm really disappointed by the "round trip routing", with or without Trendline Popularity routing option activated. It was much better on my Edge 820 and i don't undertand why, because i have exactly the same maps (Topo Pro and Garmin cycling one).

When i create a round trip course for MTB, the Edge 1030 will suggest routes with a lot of km/miles on concrete roads and so few on specific MTB ones. It doesn't do the job ! It was not so bad previously with the Edge 820.

And what about the supposed "Trendline Popularity routing" that should leverage Garmin Connect data to determine the best and most efficient routes ? Absolutely not working from my point of view, again for MTB use, i did a lot of course creations, trying to change distance and direction parameters, but the result is the same, neither course was relevant.

Do some of you experiment the same or not ?

Still no news from Garmin and still an issue since more than 8 months now... Whatever the map used (Garmin cycle map, Garmin Topo, OSM based map - Freizeikarte), it's the same issue.

The only maps I have seen that use popularity (active) routing are Garmin's 2018 cycle maps.
I can only assume they have tapped into strava heat maps and use this data.
My commute runs close to the most popular climb in my city, which is also the most popular descent. This means my commute when routed on my garmin selects part of this climb which doesn't make sense for my commute.

But, the suggested route does follow the most popular road in my area.
  • same problems here for MTB usage. tested trendline popularity routing with the web frontend shortly after I got my 1030. Seemed to work quite ok while skipping a lot of trails on the way. however, when trying that thing out several months later I did not get good results. I noticed that I used a lot of waypoints on that first route I created - the navigation thus had not many choices to make. However, when I tried to create a MTB route a second time I only gave brief information about the direction to travel (because I wanted to get to know new trails with that now available feature, after all there should already be a lot of MTB route trendline popularity data stored by then) - unfortunately it failed and created a route with lots of roadbike-like navigation on streets and paved sideroads. Same there with roundtrip routing on the device 1030 itself: no MTB routing possible, trails are skipped whenever possible in favor for bigger streets and paved roads. Combined with my already posted error that it does not save the "MTB routing" setting itself on the device that makes for a very poorly implemented feature. sadly so - because that whole trendline popularity thing is also very interesting for MTB navigation.

Firmware 6.30... still nothing has been done...
  • what maps do you have?
Someone complained about latest map and round trip routing
I did not tried functionality for mtb (because I have 1030 device for 1 week only) , but when I will have a posibility I will give a try

Whatever the maps, it doesn't change anything (i tried with Topo Pro, Garmin cycling, Freizeitkarte). Their calculation algorithm is not good. It's a marketing lie, a false promise.
  • hmmmm
I wonder why Strava does not release such a algorithm , theyr databaseses are much complete than garmin,
Still I don't understand , routing is done internaly by 1030 or it works only if the device is connected to internet?

    I just did a test:
    Edge 1030 connected to internet.
I opened my router-monitor-program to see the datatransfer between Edge and Asus-router.
On my Edge: popularity routing = on.
Started a search for 3 routes with 40 km.
During building the routes my Edge kept totally silent- no communication between Edge and internet!
