Edge 1030 round trip routing & trendline popularity routing not working as it should

Hello,

I only practice MTB. I changed my Edge 820 for an Edge 1030 and i'm really disappointed by the "round trip routing", with or without Trendline Popularity routing option activated. It was much better on my Edge 820 and i don't undertand why, because i have exactly the same maps (Topo Pro and Garmin cycling one).

When i create a round trip course for MTB, the Edge 1030 will suggest routes with a lot of km/miles on concrete roads and so few on specific MTB ones. It doesn't do the job ! It was not so bad previously with the Edge 820.

And what about the supposed "Trendline Popularity routing" that should leverage Garmin Connect data to determine the best and most efficient routes ? Absolutely not working from my point of view, again for MTB use, i did a lot of course creations, trying to change distance and direction parameters, but the result is the same, neither course was relevant.

Do some of you experiment the same or not ?

JM
  • I totally agree. Popularity routes are really weird and not logic. On road bike I get lead around cities without any sense. Also I'm sent down gravel roads and via ferries although I set them avoided in settings.

I'm too is totally disappointed. I must certainly hope this get better otherwise it's worthless.
  • I feel the exact same way about the headline feature of the Edge 1030. I did a little experiment- instead of following my usual recommended route home from work, I cycled in another direction and crossed the river Thames. My intention was to cycle on the other bank of the river and see if the Edge 1030 would suggest an alternative route.

To my disappointment, the bloody thing kept alerting me that I am cycling in the wrong direction. I gave up and starting a new navigation activity (having crossed the river already); Guess what- the 1030 suggested I go back across the bridge and use the path it originally suggested?!!!!

I believe that these are all just buzz words as the 1030 can do "trendline routing", while disconnected from my phone. If it does not try to communicate with the Garmin Connect portal on an ongoing basis how does it even pretend to offer trendline routing at all??
  • I'm getting the same thing. with popularity routing & avoiding major highways set on the Garmin. It creates 2/3 courses on major highways. No one bikes on these roads either, I'd be crazy to follow the routes.
  • My problem with using trend-line routing with round-trip routing is that for a given starting direction and distance, it comes up with very few distinct rides.

On road bike I get lead around cities without any sense.

One hunch is that Garmin is not distinguishing activities in their database based on what kind of activity it was. It’s possible it’s being skewed or dominated by commutes.

One thing that’s nice about where I live is that the hills (sparsely populated with lots of open space preserves) are all to the north and west and the valley floor (urban / suburban) is in the opposite direction, so I just tell it to start out heading west or north.

I guess we can hope that as this feature evolves, we can ask for “road training” or “commute” or “touring” etc. and the algorithm will use appropriate activities for the “trend line.”

Yep, Have the same experience. MTB-ride but the computer wanted me to go miles on asphalt (there super trails in the area with ALOT of rides there). When trying with road cycling, it wanted me to bike on a E-way (In Europe, all the international important ways as Freeway starts with E).

Could a person from Garmin Support tells us if this problem is gonna be adressed shortly ?
Trendline popularity routing is one of the key new option with 1030 and it's obviously not working.

Why no one from Garmin Support answer to this topic ? Is there an issue or not from Garmin point of view ?
  • Sorry for the delayed response. I have reported the concerns mentioned here about popularity routing.

    Ok, thanks for your answer

Any updates about this? Does it work only with Garmins maps or also with normal osm maps?
