1st ride report = Happy with it.

Many times on these forums all we read about are problems and issues with very few positive reports. Here is my 1st ride report from yesterday with the Edge 1030.

I have Garmin magnetless speed and cadence sensors paired to it along with a Sony Z5 Compact Android phone and a scosche rhythm+ HR.

Initial impressions:
  • It?s ginormous! Coming from the smaller computers (Edge 520, Edge 820, Wahoo Bolt) this thing is massive! I assume I will get use to the size over time but I feel like I have an iPad strapped to my bike! Towards the end of the ride it was starting to grow on me.
  • The larger screen is nice to have especially with older eyes like mine. I still need to wear my contacts to read anything but the larger screen comes in handy for map viewing and reading SMS messages mainly.
  • The backlight is dim, even at 100%. Not really an issue for me as I keep all my other computers set to zero. I cycle in the desert and the sun is always bright so I don?t really need backlight.
  • Huge improvement in direct sun readability -v- the Edge 1000 and the Edge 820. Garmin and touchscreens have always meant somewhat cruddy contrast. The Edge 1030 is super crisp and clear outdoors! Dare I say close to the Wahoo screen contrast.
  • The screen is responsive to touch and it is slightly improved over my Edge 820. I'd peg that the Edge 1030, when set to Medium sensitivity, is equal to the Edge 820 when it's set to High sensetivity. The Edge 1030 when set to High sensitivity is very responsive to input, touch and swipes.
  • Not diggin the white color. Maybe it will grow on me and I do not like the silicone cases
  • Need to get screen protector for it (dusty desert rides)
  • Like the new SD card placement
  • New out front mount is rock solid and the computer gets locked in firmly
  • I dig the redesigned look of the home screen (similar to the 820) and I like the new widget options. Swipe down then left or right to see missed messages, weather, segments ect. I had hoped the 820 would get this but it has not yet.

I went on a 36 mile ride without using navigation. Tomorrow I?ll load a route and follow it to see how the Edge 1030 does. I?ll also go off course to see how it behaves. I also didn?t do any Segments today so I?ll test those as well going forward.

I didn?t have any sensor or BT phone disconnects during the ride. I received 12 text messages and they all displayed on the Edge 1030.

One cool thing to note, on Android, is that you can respond right from the Edge 1030 to SMS's. There are a few short responses available and you can't customize (add more or delete the ready made ones) but hopefully that option will come at some point. Responding to SMS is different from rider to rider messaging and it lets you respond to SMS from anyone that texts you on your phone.

When the Edge alerts to an SMS on the left side is an X to clear it and on the right side is a SMS bubble icon. Tapping on that icon brings you to the list of short messages to select from. Tap on the one you want and away it goes like magic! Pretty cool but I would not try and respond while moving. My responses were sent when stopped at a red light.

Here are a few screen grabs from my phone that I took after the ride showing how the responses look to the receiver.

I wondered how she knew it was coming from my Garmin but you can see that after my short response it says -Sent from my Garmin. I do not believe this feature is available on iOS..

I have screen sensitivity set to High and it worked well. It is slightly better than the Edge 820 and is more responsive to touch, input and swipes.. The screen while dim indoors, is crisp and clear when viewed in direct sunlight and the colors really pop on it.

Battery started at 100% and my ride was 2 hours and 41 minutes (2:16 moving time) and when the ride ended the battery was at 89%. Backlight was set to zero, 1 second recording, BT phone connected with GPS and Glonass on.

The ride uploaded fine to GC after it was ended and then auto sync'd over to Strava.

Overall it worked fine, battery life was stellar (if these #'s hold up), outdoor readability in direct sun is vastly improved, and the screen was very responsive.

  • Nice to see another happy report. I now have used my 1030 on 12 rides (mostly commuting) and I have not had any dropouts. I am pairing with a Samsung S7E. I had my wife text me on one ride to try the notification and it worked perfectly for me as well. However, I must admit that I am not as popular as you since that is the only message I have received in 12 rides :)
  • Some days I get numerous messages and others I can ride for 4 hours and get none. When it rains it pours!

I hope at some point that Garmin has a way for us to customize the canned messages we can send in response. I'd like to add a few of my own and delete a few I'd never use..
  • I am liking the new cycle map provided as a default. Previously I used OSM bike routable maps, but find the new Garmin version very clear and seems to have our local paths on it. Of course this map does not include topo lines or our usual offroad trails, so still resorting to my old Topo USA maps files for that (openmtb wants double $ for what I'd be willing to pay). FWIW, my old 2013 City Navigator maps (NA and Eur) don't display at all when enabled... perhaps exporting chunks of those via BaseCamp will create usable .img files in the 1030... TBD.

With my blurry aging eyes (after years of computer work) I find the need to bump up the map text size by +1 in all the available options (and of course for each profile where I use a map).

Odd about your report that the backlight is not bright even when at 100%. Mine works great.

The wifi upload feature is very convenient. I leave wifi off (to save battery) until walking into the garage at the end of a ride, then turn wifi on. By the time I've parked the bike the ride is uploaded automatically, then I disable wifi again and shutdown. Sweet.
  • Just an additional bit of info regarding SMS. On a ride today I received an incoming call with name that instantaneously popped up on my 1030. Just like an incoming text it also had the option to dismiss or send a "canned" text reply. Pretty cool.
  • I'm also a happy owner of the edge 1030. I did 2 rides (65 and 125 km) with full navigation, bluetooth, strava, backlight auto, connected to my S7E, everything on. No problems at all. And 2 normal rides commuting, which one in the dark. Navigation works like a charm, no dropouts. The screen works with gloves on. I tested it with 2 pair of castelli gloves. Battery life is looking good, on my 125 km ride with everything on, the battery dropped 23 % for a 4 hour 20 min ride.
the only problem i had was to find my wifi network for the first time, the device would't find it. After 20 min and several attempts it was setup. After a week and 4 rides, a great device. Changing the replies to the incoming text message would indeed be a good change. Recovery time is also not working here, maybe after a few rides or a firmware update? I don't use powermeters. The altitude problem i don't know, because i don't have hilly rides in the area.
  • Today's ride was 42 miles using a Strava course and I completed 2 Strava segments. I loaded the course with the Strava Routes IQ app and it took about 1-2 minutes to fully load and ready to go.

I had the same sensors as yesterday (magnetless speed, cadence and rhythm+ HR) and phone connected. Edge set to 1 second recording, GPS and Glonass on and the backlight set to 0. The battery was at 89% when the ride started. Total time was 3 hours and 16 minutes (2:48 moving time) and the battery was at 72% after the ride so 17% used. Not bad at all.

I went off course twice and the Edge wanted to route me back to where I had left the course. I really wish Garmin could solve this and add an option to navigate to a new course entry point. The problem with routing back to where you left is if the road is closed you?d be right back where you started and still unable to continue. On the bright side, the large screen does make it easy to find your own back back on course at a different entry point.

I did not stay on the map page during the ride. When approaching a turn the map with TBT directions would popup and then after completing the turn, the map would go away and I?d be taken back to the data screen I was previously on.

I didn?t have any sensor or BT disconnects and I received 7 or 8 text messages. None were important or needed a short response so I read them and pedaled onward.

Segments were a bust! This is an out and back route and one of the segments is for South bound direction. When I was north bound the segment popped up and refused after a mile to clear. It should have known the direction I was traveling and the direction in which the segment runs. Also, it failed to clear even as I moved further away from it. Finally I manually exit it.

The next segment did not even give me a warning I was approaching it. Out of the blue it said GO!. During the segment I was not given time ahead or behind nor was I given distance to end. It was just a big map page with nothing but the road and 2 blue chevrons. A larger one for my PR and a smaller one for my current effort. When the segment ended I was given no update as to my time or anything else. The next segment, was the one I previously described that popped up in the wrong direction and would not clear, was later down the route and it loaded then immediately said ended. No map page like I previously described, nothing. At the end of the segment the name of it popped up again but I was not given any info or data.

Segments were a massive FAIL! Not sure if this was due to me riding a course or not so I will try a few segments tomorrow when not following a course.

Overall all the 1030 performed well again today and I have zero issues to report with the exception of the segments issue.. The ride uploaded instantly after I saved it and then sync?d over the Strava.
  • Just a quick update re: the Segments issue I previously described. Today was a 47 mile ride (no course or TBT) and I completed 5 segments. They all worked exactly as they should.

No issue at all on today's ride. Not sure what caused yesterday's segment problems but maybe it was route related.
  • Yesterday's ride was not a good one for the 1030...

All the sensors refused connect automatically. Rebooted the Edge, no dice! Finally manually connected them. I didn't have any sensor disconnects after that.

Next up were BT phone issues. I had several disconnects during the 38 mile ride. I was never alerted to these disconnects but was alerted after the phone auto reconnected. I believe I had 7 or 8 disconnects total. I heard my phone ringing during one of these disconnects and was not alerted on the 1030.

I had not changed anything settings wise so not sure what prompted the issues I saw.

I did a factory reset last night and will see if that solves the problems. Today I am doing a 52 mile route before my rest day tomorrow.
  • First ride today.
Phone connection flawlessly, sensors stayed - except remote: disconnects after not using it about 5 minutes. It's a known issue.
Grade datafield seems to have only one digit - on slopes bigger than 9% the Edge delivers weird figures - but never two digits.

I was looking forward to see the display outdoor, because indoor it is very poor looking.
    But outdoor - wonderful!

Hopefully the remote-issue will be solved soon.
