Edge 1030 impressions- great so far!

Hi Everyone,

I have had the Edge 1030 performance bundle since launch.
I understand that this is a forum and that people typically join a board like this to troubleshoot problems that they are experiencing.

However, it does strike me that there are virtually no positive posts about this cycling computer. As an owner of the Edge 1000 before that, I find that the screen is much more responsive and easier to use. I have not experienced any bugs that have led to my ride being interrupted mid-way or to being unable to save an activity.

All my profiles and saved sensors have remained intact through updating/restarting the device. Sensor reliability has been stellar with no missing data.
In addition, having uploaded UK custom maps I purchased from Talkytoaster, I am amazed by how much information can be displayed, without getting the Edge 1030 to grind to a halt.

Navigation use has been great with timely turn alerts and rerouting when I miss/am unable to make a right or left turn. Generated routes are generally quite good.

The only real issue I came across was that my ride from this morning would not sync with Garmin Connect, even though it was saved successfully. I had to pair the 1030 to my phone anew to upload it.

Cheers,
Nick
  • Having had mine for 3 weeks now, I am generally happy with my purchase, which replaced an 810. You're right....a majority of people will only be searching/posting the forum as they have an issue.

    1. I was concerned at the screen's dimness whilst inside (and during setup)...but outside, and on the bike, I cannot fault it. It is clear in all weathers and responsive to touch, even in rain. Not ridden at night...so that will be interesting.
    2. Bluetooth keeps losing connectivity to the (Samsung S8) phone. I thought I had sorted this, and that the GC app always had to be running for connectivity (if it had silently crashed, I did not know and launching it would re-connect). However, I have had to re-pair a few times to re-establish comms recently. That, is annoying, but hopefully fixed in a later software/firmware release
    3. In trying to fix #2 I had turned wifi on and off (as some folks think it is related to connectivity)....and what I find is sometimes upload at the end of the ride does not work. I assume if Wifi is on, it will try that, if not, it will use Bluetooth (if the phone is connected!). It has not been consistent.
    4. I have had no dropout or disconnect of sensors (using Garmin speed/cadence and HR). Some people have reported certain sensors simply not being retained, or dropping mid ride.
    5. Navigation and TBT has been pretty flawless (although some roundabouts are more shown as squares or pentagons!), although the time to calculate some routes is pretty excessive
    6. I have had real time segment issues whereby at the end of the segment it will not return to the main screen. Subsequent live segments are then not seen. Doesn't happen all of the time
    7. Battery life is good. Cannot say I have ridden for 10+ hours...but rides of 3 hours, have only taken about 20% out of the battery (with nav enabled).
    8. I love text and phone notifications - these work really well. Would I like some enhancements for other apps and the addition of custom reply messages ? Yes.
    9. Profiles took some getting used to, as the 810 was different how it approached that. Folks upgrading from the 1000 will be familiar with them though,
    10. I have had a few random power-off moments. Never on the bike (thankfully!)....it has always been when changing settings or looking at a route when in the house. Weird, as it is not a "sleep"...it just seems to shut off completely.

It is only #2 that is really annoying at the moment, as from one ride to the next, you don't know if it is going to connect.
  • I too am generally pleased with my upgrade from the 1000.
    • The battery life is great! I finished a century ride with a bit more than 50% of battery capacity (nav w/o bluetooth).
    • The display is very nice ... text is crisp and easy to read.
    • The adhoc navigation is OK ... on a recent exploratory ride, it had me go on a road that I am comfortable with, but I suspect many people wouldn't be (I'm an experienced road rider).
    • Following a course is pretty good ... once or twice, when I went off route, it took a few moments longer than I expected to notify me.
    • I've had a few issues with the bluetooth connection to my phone, but I'm willing to put up with that being an early adopter.
    • The silicone case is a bit of a disappointment ... it provides what I need (a lip around the edge to keep the display from sitting on a surface if the unit gets placed face down), but little extra protection.
  • I am glad you started this thread. I was starting to think I got the only good unit. I have not had any issues with my unit connecting to my phone, sensors, or with rides uploading immediately after finishing a ride. Livetrack has worked for me and I have downloaded routes/courses from Strava and from Garmin Connect and both types of courses seem to work fine.

I mostly use this for commuting and in looking at 4 rides in so far the reported distances are: 8.23, 8.24, 8.24 and 8.26 miles. I only have two of the same ride home so far (I vary that a bit) but the reported distances are 9.75 and 9.77 miles (different route home than in). Thus, I am thrilled with how repeatable these results are. Much tighter than my previous Polar RS800CX would do.

Just in case it adds some insight. I am using the 1030 with the Garmin speed sensor, Garmin cadence sensor and Garmin premium heart rate strap and sensor. Before each ride I enable bluetooth on my phone and open the Garmin Connect app. Each ride so far has been riding a course I have downloaded. My phone is a Samsung S7E running the latest software on Verizon.

I do not have WiFi enabled on the 1030, I am not sure what I would get out of doing so since it seems like everything the 1030 has wanted to do so far it is able to do through the bluetooth connection to my phone. I am not sure if the details of my setup will help anyone but if you are doing something different perhaps try something similar to what I am doing and see if that helps.
