Attempting Device Transfers

I have tried in the past to send a course to a friend's Edge 1000 from my Edge 1000, without success.

Now I have my Edge 1000 sitting next to my new Edge 1030, and I'm trying again. I put one course on the 1000, and another on the 1030. Each device has only the one course, no workouts or other files I might want to share.

I powered each device on. (They're both pretty fast, but the 1000 might have come up faster than the 1030.) Then I went to Device Transfers on the 1000 - it's spinning away, looking for "nearby connections", and not finding one. Then I told the 1030 to do Device Transfers - it, too, is looking, and looking, and looking....

Earlier, I did get the 1030 to "see" the 1000, but I didn't have a file to send. (No joy with the 1000 seeing another device so far.) Now, I can't get either one to see the other.

This is what the manual says:
1. Turn on both Edge devices, and bring them within range (3M) of each other.
2. From the device that contains the files, select
Connected Features > Device Transfers > Share Files
3. Select a file type to share.
4. Select one or more files to transfer.
5. From the device that receives the files, select
Connected Features > Device Transfers
6. Select a nearby connection.
7. Select one or more files to receive.
A message appears on both devices after the file transfer is complete.

Has anyone successfully used this feature with either the Edge 1000 or the new 1030? Does anyone have the capability to try doing this? I'd sure appreciate some help!
  • I have successfully transferred courses between 1000s several times using the steps above. I just tried transferring from the 1030 to the 1000, the 1000 recognized the 1030, but during the process I received a "Connection Failed."

Edit: I just tried it again but never got a recognition, connection or message. It should connect immediately and transfer quickly. Another bug to add to Garmin's list.
  • I tried transfer courses for the first time when I first got my 1030. I had no problems, although it took a bit longer than I think it should have.

I transfered courses from my old Edge 1000 to the 1030 when I first got the unit.
    I transfered a course from my 1030 to a friends 1000 mid-ride.

  • David, are you following the steps outlined in the manual? Any changes or additions at all?
  • TBH, I didn't read the manual for that ... I just did the steps that came intuitively (I'm a tech geek).

That said, I did have a problem transferring a route from my 1030 to a friends 520 ... but that had more to do with my unfamiliarly with the 520 than a problem doing the transfer.
