His conclusion:

My advice, if you already have a solid cycling computer and thinking of buying the Edge 1030 then hold off until all the reviews are out and Garmin have ironed out the bugs.

He mentioned his 1030 crashed too often to be considered reliable. Usage with gloves was unreliable and it was laggy as well.
  • I have never had the 1030 crash on me. I have not experienced any issues with the device being laggy either. LOL
  • Who is this person and why would I care what he writes on his ad-riddled website?
  • Agree completely.

Some users have functioning units. Others not.

You cannot really extrapolate your own individual personal experience to the general picture.

In my opinion (!) the Edge 1030 isn?t fit for purpose at the moment. Mine was basically a big battery that logged my ride. It wouldn?t do much else! Hopefully when it?s sorted it will be fine. Screen size and mapping was great.

What is shocking is any kind of response or feedback from Garmin themselves. The rep for the LBS dealing with me didn?t comment. The UK support people have been fantastic in the past. Complete silence this time.

So, because of Garmin?s lack of response, I returned mine to the LBS for a refund.

My Edge 810 still logs my rides really well and posts them onto Strava instantly. I?ve just found a little cable that will re-charge it from my USE Strada Light, so it?s good for 400km+ rides or more

  • I just came back from a test ride with my Garmin 1030 and everything worked fine. My setup:

1: Garmin Edge 1030 paired with OnePlus 5 android phone = no problems
2: wifi at home did not work, but when I manually entered the wifi network setup it worked.
3: my wife did some test sms and they came through. I could answer them with the Edge 1030 possible answers.
4: livetrack worked. My wife saw me cycling. Only problem is that livetrack in google says that livetrack activity is not completed but the session is completed.
5: Garmin worked fine with Garmin Varia UT800 light. the lightnetwork on the Garmin worked fine.
6: The Garmin worked fine. No problems occcured. The Display is crisp, but has a lack of color. The colors don't pop and don't stand out. Don't know if this is normal.
7: When I came home, my trip was transfered to Strava by wifi.
  • I have had two small rides with my 1030. All sensors connected instantly. Auto started the ride when speed came above 20 km/h. Shifted through screens with Edge remote. Checked the weather via the phone. Once done, 1030 uploaded via WiFi.

No dropouts, no issues. The 1030 just worked.

One sidenote, when playing around with route calculation (out and back), I did have some freezing almost every calculating. I had to hard reset the device to get it back.

Other than that, no issues as already mentioned.
  • I have had my 1030 for 2 weeks, in that time I`ve done 10 real rides and a few short test rides. My 1030 works properly 50% of the time.

My issue is the intermittent nature of the post ride sync. Ideally, I should end the ride at home in WIFI range and that should be that.

As I stated it`s 50 50. I have a WIFI signal, the banner on the 1030 says `upload complete` and nothing appears in Garmin Connect or the Garmin App.

Trying to do the same via Bluetooth has had similar results, sometimes it works, sometimes it says `device is busy`.
I am hoping for a firmware fix from Garmin, if that resolves my issues, great. It will be getting returned if not. I am really annoyed with my 1030 and Garmin for releasing a product that is just not ready for the public.
  • If got the new Garmin edge 1030 today in the Netherlands.
Setting it up was a breeze with the Garmin connect App (Samsung S8)
Every sensor was detected Speed/ Cadans / Shimano DI2 / Home WIFI.
After the first ride when I got home the ride was sync over WIFI to Strava .
I am very pleased so far.
    Kind Regards Hans

Truth be told, it reads like a pretty fair review. He comes off objective and obviously knows Garmin products. Also, he is not bashing the unit or admonishing people not to buy it. My impression of the review was that if you don't own a good cycling computer, he is saying this one would be good even with some early bugs and so few reviews in. He only seems to be cautioning people who already own a good cycling computer to consider holding off.

I think that is very prudent advice. I love my Edge 1000, and I absolutely intend to upgrade to this one. But since none of what the 1030 offers is immediately necessary to me, I had already decided on that course of action before reading his review.

I am very encouraged to read a lot of the experiences of people in this forum with the 1030, as well as DC Rainmaker's review. But anyone who owns an Edge 1000 or an Edge 8xx that works fine, should at least consider waiting, unless they really want the 1030 now.
