Screen won't work with gloves on

Bought the 1030 yesterday. Configured it last night. On today's ride I noticed a lot of things just don't work:

1. The screen won't respond when wearing gloves.

Swiping left and right sometimes works, but the most important thing for me is zooming the map screen. I tend to ride with this showing all the time on some rides. A tap on the screen should bring up the zoom buttons at the top of the screen, but nothing happens at all.

2. Gradient goes up to around 4% maximum, even when on 20% hills...!

3. Bluetooth sync seems to disappear, so no weather forecasting while riding. Even though calls and texts come through. How can the 1030 be connected and not connected to my phone at the same time?

4. Uploading the ride to Garmin Connect / Strava at the end of the ride doesn't work over BT either. Garmin Connect just says the 1030 'is busy'. Connecting it to my computer, Garmin Express can't see it anymore either!! Still mounts on the desktop so I can grab the .fit file.

5. Auto lapping seems to be happening while riding... annoying and very strange.

6. Is it possible to manage the stored locations? I used to use Basecamp for this, but it doesn?t seem to connect anymore. Is there another way to managed the individual saved locations? I know how to move them en-masse from one GPS device to another using locations.fit, but with BaseCamp it was great being able to manage individual locations, rename them, etc.

Taking it it back to my LBS for a refund on Monday I think. It's just not ready for use yet...
  • Please keep in mind that when you are using thicker gloves you might want to adjust the touch sensitivity on the device to high. Proper fitting touch sensitive finger tipped gloves will improve the experience.

Shawn, are you saying we need to use touch-sensitive gloves for the screen to work properly? That's unacceptable. I'm very picky about fit and comfort of the gloves I ride with, and none of them are touch-sensitive. The screen needs to be fully usable with gloves, touch-sensitive or not. Is there a software fix for this?
  • With the cold weather now, I've been using full finger gloves and they work no problem on my 1030. Nothing special about the gloves that I've had for years.

  • I use full-finger gloves for most of my riding year-round, and I've found that my 1030 does not reliably respond with gloves on. I won't say it never works, but it is definitely inconsistent unless I stop and take a glove off. It sounds like some others have had the same experience, and the messages from Garmin are ambiguous. I just want some clarity on whether my 1030 us functioning normally or I've got a defective unit.

  • What SW version are you using? I have never had any issues with gloves in either the hot or cold...
  • Today, I have first used 1030 with full finger gloves. Problems are caused by bad conductivity of gloves, so you can solve it keeping them slightly wet. A short contact of finger tip on your tongue is enough to make it work.
I have check it with high sensitivity of screen, but I think it should also work for medium sensitivity.

I've also had problems getting my 1030 screen to work with gloves. Testing inside, most of my gloves work. When I start riding, they will work well for awhile, but gradually work less and less until I am unable to do anything with them. Could temperature be playing a role? The 1030 is warm when I start. Currently, I'm riding in 25-45F temperatures. It is very frustrating. When riding at night, I can't even tap the screen to activate the backlight so I can see it (and I don't want to have the backlight stay on all of the time as that greatly shortens the battery life). Therefore, at night, I can use it to record my ride, but nothing else during the ride!
  • Putting all this together, humidity does sound like the key. As temperature drops, humidity decreses (warm air can carry more moisture).

Well, what the heck, it's already an expensive gadget, so it makes sense the solution is also expensive. Dura-Ace Di2 set up with the latest wireless gadget that talks to the garmin. That way you can use the "secret" buttons on the STI levers to control the garmin functions.
  • Same problem here. Inside ok, outside not ok in temperatures below about 8 degrees. When temperatures rises the gloves work. Wetting the fingertips won't work. Senstivity is set to high.
  • Yes, ever since the temperatures here in New England plummeted, my 1030 completely stopped responding with gloves on. It's very pleasant having to take a glove off when it's -2F outside!

Same issue with cold temps here in the UK. Gloves are fine indoors but will not work as soon as the unit is out in the cold. Sensitivity on max and software up to date, please sort this out Garmin.
