Screen won't work with gloves on

Bought the 1030 yesterday. Configured it last night. On today's ride I noticed a lot of things just don't work:

1. The screen won't respond when wearing gloves.

Swiping left and right sometimes works, but the most important thing for me is zooming the map screen. I tend to ride with this showing all the time on some rides. A tap on the screen should bring up the zoom buttons at the top of the screen, but nothing happens at all.

2. Gradient goes up to around 4% maximum, even when on 20% hills...!

3. Bluetooth sync seems to disappear, so no weather forecasting while riding. Even though calls and texts come through. How can the 1030 be connected and not connected to my phone at the same time?

4. Uploading the ride to Garmin Connect / Strava at the end of the ride doesn't work over BT either. Garmin Connect just says the 1030 'is busy'. Connecting it to my computer, Garmin Express can't see it anymore either!! Still mounts on the desktop so I can grab the .fit file.

5. Auto lapping seems to be happening while riding... annoying and very strange.

6. Is it possible to manage the stored locations? I used to use Basecamp for this, but it doesn?t seem to connect anymore. Is there another way to managed the individual saved locations? I know how to move them en-masse from one GPS device to another using locations.fit, but with BaseCamp it was great being able to manage individual locations, rename them, etc.

Taking it it back to my LBS for a refund on Monday I think. It's just not ready for use yet...

Does anyone know the history of why Garmin made the jump from resistive to capacitive touch screens (assuming they did, and this is a significant factor in why there have been consistent complaints about the screens on the 1000, 820 and 1030)?

Whilst the 800 and 810 had many other problems I don't recall anyone complaining about the touchscreen - yet it seems to have become the major source of complaints on the 3 biggest upgrades since then (and possibly a reason why the 520 is still seen as a relatively well reviewed option). Presumably there must have been a significant driver to make that move... cost?
  • In my experience, the screen on the 1000 worked similarly to that on the 800/810. The screen on the 820 is notoriously unresponsive. The 1030 is a whole lot better than the 820, but not as good as the 800/810/1000 screens. Garmin has said that this makes it better in wet conditions, but I'm not sure that the trade-off is worth it and I was mostly happy with the screen on my 1000.
  • Please keep in mind that when you are using thicker gloves you might want to adjust the touch sensitivity on the device to high. Proper fitting touch sensitive finger tipped gloves will improve the experience.
  • I've found that the gloves I'm using affect how easy/hard it is to use the screen with gloves on. The ones that have rubber grippy stuff on the fingers are a bit tougher to use than ones that don't have any grip when I'm using the screen.
  • When i'm indoors and put my gloves on (castelli spettacolo with touchscreen tips) i can swipe the screens of the1030 without a problem. When i go outside for a ride after a few minutes i can't swipe anymore with my gloves on? strange things happens, sensivity is set to high. Must say this is a major setback for me regarding the edge 1030

Same here...., first few times with gloves it works well..., after a few times, stops working, you can't swipe anymore.
    Indeed an annoying bug
  • I've only ridden once so far with full fingered gloves on. These are Assos Insulator Gloves, meant to be used under other gloves when it's really cold. They're usually enough for me in Southern California. I did notice that screen response wasn't great with my gloves on. Then I read this thread, and checked my settings. (I was surprised that touch sensitivity was my activity profile, rather than related to the display.) Sensitivity was set to Low. I've changed it to High, and operating the Edge with the gloves on seems to work just fine.
  • I mentioned this on another similar thread, but I’ll add it here:

What I noticed is that, in comparison to the Edge 1000 (the only other touch-screen Garmin device with which I have any experience), the Edge 1030 requires longer touches to register a tap. At first, especially while I was naming my sensors, it seemed like the touch screen had stopped working entirely. After a while I realized that if I slow down and hold each tap for at least a half a second the touch screen works just fine, including with gloves on.

Castelli mid weight and 1 estremo and they both don’t work at all. I also have a pair of Pactimo light gloves with the magnetic area and they work great.

Bizarre but not because it’s the type of screen.
  • Just catching up with this thread. I've got Gore Windstopper gloves, and they don't work at all with the 1030. Has Garmin offered any definitive statements on what gloves work and what don't (and why)? It's a crucial feature (example: text message shows up on screen and blocks map, can't clear it unless I stop bike and remove gloves). I'm open to keeping the device (just purchased) if I can be sure it'll work with a set of winter gloves.
