Screen won't work with gloves on

Bought the 1030 yesterday. Configured it last night. On today's ride I noticed a lot of things just don't work:

1. The screen won't respond when wearing gloves.

Swiping left and right sometimes works, but the most important thing for me is zooming the map screen. I tend to ride with this showing all the time on some rides. A tap on the screen should bring up the zoom buttons at the top of the screen, but nothing happens at all.

2. Gradient goes up to around 4% maximum, even when on 20% hills...!

3. Bluetooth sync seems to disappear, so no weather forecasting while riding. Even though calls and texts come through. How can the 1030 be connected and not connected to my phone at the same time?

4. Uploading the ride to Garmin Connect / Strava at the end of the ride doesn't work over BT either. Garmin Connect just says the 1030 'is busy'. Connecting it to my computer, Garmin Express can't see it anymore either!! Still mounts on the desktop so I can grab the .fit file.

5. Auto lapping seems to be happening while riding... annoying and very strange.

6. Is it possible to manage the stored locations? I used to use Basecamp for this, but it doesn?t seem to connect anymore. Is there another way to managed the individual saved locations? I know how to move them en-masse from one GPS device to another using locations.fit, but with BaseCamp it was great being able to manage individual locations, rename them, etc.

Taking it it back to my LBS for a refund on Monday I think. It's just not ready for use yet...

Seems from that review it certainly is market ready.

Ray does great reviews, but, it very well may be that his review was done on a preproduction model (including the software). Also, unless you haven't been paying attention, there have been numerous issues documented on this very forum. That shouldn't happen with a "market ready" product. Oh, but then again, Google produces "market ready" stuff which in reality is really just a beta.

And it wouldn't surprise me he may have mentioned it to Garmin and they said it would be fixed by ship time, so that could have been omitted from the review.

This happened with the 1000 as well and as one of the early adopters it is extremely frustrating. You shouldn't have to take five steps backwards with a new piece of hardware over you existing model. That is what is happening to many people right now. You should be able to connect your phone in a few seconds, not an hour or more. You should get proper temperature readings as well as slope. You should be able do certain tasks without the system all of a sudden setting an option. I am sure there are more which really haven't been documented yet because people are scratching there heads as "how did that get turned on or off".

QA is an art. So is development. However, sometimes both get overruled by the marketing types and the mantra is "we'll fix it later and deal with the complaints in the meantime".
  • On yesterday and today's rides I used a pair of full finger lightweight gloves. On my unit the screen seemed to respond the same as without the gloves. I am sure that each pair of gloves will have a different result.
  • The screen question here should be whether the 1030 is a capacitive screen. If so, you need gloves with conductive fingers. I tried swiping the screen with some old Gore gloves. These do not have conductive fingers and cannot be used to operate an 820, which has a capacitive screen. It will operate an 800 or 810 which has a resistive screen. The Gore gloves will not operate the 1030. I then used a specialized gove, which has conductive fingers. This glove operated the screen just fine. So, the 1030 screen is capacitive and will require gloves with conductive fingers.
  • For the doubters, Garmin said the 1030 works with gloves here

Just tried mine with a pair of cycling gloves, just standard ones, not with special finger coatings or anything and it worked fine. Maybe they have multiple screen suppliers and there are variations in sensitivity, DCR mentioned he thought that was why the 820 had such massive variability in the screen.

    .

    I apologize. I stand corrected.

But it baffles me. A capacitive touch screen requires a conductive object such as your bare finger to work. However most gloves are insulating.

If the glove can build & hold an electrostatic charge, I can see it working intermittently.
  • My LBS refunded my returned 1030 in full. Look forward to the 1040, or whatever. Strangely their Garmin rep was silent on the matter. Will be interesting to see how this scenario unfolds?

I rode in the rain Saturday with thick gloves on and my Garmin 1030 worked great. I was able to swipe the screen with ease and didn't have any false screen presses with the water pooling on the screen. I had an Edge 820 that I got rid of because it wouldn't work with gloves even with the sensitivity set to high. On the 1030 I have the sensitivity set to high as well. I imagine you've tried that. It sounds like either you don't know how to use it..... ;)

or you got a bad unit. Can you try another 1030 at your local shop with the same gloves?

My 1030 has been working really well. I've seen a few sensor dropouts but other than that, it's been working really great for a new Garmin product.

Hi Greg, can you check if your able to zoom the map with gloves on? This is what mine wouldn’t do at all.

You probably know how to do this. With the map displayed while riding you tap on the screen once to bring up the + and - buttons, then press on these to adjust the map zoom.

I guess if your unit does respond with gloves then my unit, now returned, was faulty?

    Thanks

  • When i'm indoors and put my gloves on (castelli spettacolo with touchscreen tips) i can swipe the screens of the1030 without a problem. When i go outside for a ride after a few minutes i can't swipe anymore with my gloves on? strange things happens, sensivity is set to high. Must say this is a major setback for me regarding the edge 1030
