Screen won't work with gloves on

Bought the 1030 yesterday. Configured it last night. On today's ride I noticed a lot of things just don't work:

1. The screen won't respond when wearing gloves.

Swiping left and right sometimes works, but the most important thing for me is zooming the map screen. I tend to ride with this showing all the time on some rides. A tap on the screen should bring up the zoom buttons at the top of the screen, but nothing happens at all.

2. Gradient goes up to around 4% maximum, even when on 20% hills...!

3. Bluetooth sync seems to disappear, so no weather forecasting while riding. Even though calls and texts come through. How can the 1030 be connected and not connected to my phone at the same time?

4. Uploading the ride to Garmin Connect / Strava at the end of the ride doesn't work over BT either. Garmin Connect just says the 1030 'is busy'. Connecting it to my computer, Garmin Express can't see it anymore either!! Still mounts on the desktop so I can grab the .fit file.

5. Auto lapping seems to be happening while riding... annoying and very strange.

6. Is it possible to manage the stored locations? I used to use Basecamp for this, but it doesn?t seem to connect anymore. Is there another way to managed the individual saved locations? I know how to move them en-masse from one GPS device to another using locations.fit, but with BaseCamp it was great being able to manage individual locations, rename them, etc.

Taking it it back to my LBS for a refund on Monday I think. It's just not ready for use yet...
  • In regards to the gloves, have you attempted changing the screen sensitivity? The setting for this is specific to each profile and can be set to low, medium or high.

Auto lap is a feature also specific to each profile. It may have been turned on accidentally as I thought they were off by default
  • Yes, sensitivity was the 1st thing I tried, made no difference. Lucky for me I have a great relationship with my LBS, I called in there towards the end of the ride and showed them how it didn't work at all with gloves on. They are more than happy to refund me in full. I've spent a lot more with them than the cost of this piece of junk.

Took mine back to my LBS too as far to many problems.
Will revisit in 6 months when the firmware may have been fixed.
Garmin have previous form for Beta testing expensive kit on it's customers.
Cant wait for a serious competitor to come along.

Yes, I?m quite disappointed. I?ve used various Garmin?s for a very long time. My Edge 810 still working fine (eventually) I use a 64S when I?m sea-kayaking and it?s actually great. Lots of software feature that really work and are well thought out. But the lack of functionality on the1030 is far beyond anything I?ve experienced before. I can no longer be bothered to work through the issues, why should I?

In order for the weather forecast to work you need to have Location enabled on your smartphone. Bluetooth by itself is not enough.

Many Garmin models have autolap enabled by default. You can disable it if you don't like it.

Suspect it's more that you haven't really learnt how to use it correctly.

  • As for gloves, my reply posted in another thread:

Some manufacturers make "Touchscreen-compatible" gloves. I have several such long-fingered gloves by Pearl Izumi and navigating the touchscreen with them works (sensitivity set to "high").

Thanks for your concern?s Mr Moderator :-) Much appreciated.

I have been using Garmins for a very very long time.

This?s one doesn?t work. Wearing my ordinary gloves riding the bike, the screen was un-responsive. Nothing to do with ?learning to use it correctly? I?m afraid. It?s rubbish, and going back asap.

This expectation is totally unreasonable on your part. Where did Garmin say it was glove friendly?.If the grass is greener over there....bye..bye!!

  • I would suggest to Mr. Moderator to take it very easy on his comments. This product was not tested and mature enough to come out to the market. There are so many things that don?t work properly and most of them are not new features but things that used to work perfectly on older models. May be someone is starting to get nervous about this epic failure and you shouldn?t have this attitude. We, clients , are right and you are representing a manufacturer that decide to put in market a product that I was clearly not ready
