Edge 1030 good for mountainbike usage?

I'm reading some posts that indicate that routing for mountainbike / off road usage on the edge 1000 isn't really that good.

How is the 1030 for mountainbike usage? In theory I would love the trendline routing, but I already have seen some weird routing errors nearby on the GC website.
  • Its just how they are tagged in OSM. Go over to http://www.openstreetmap.org , navigate to your area and use the "?" tool to look at the tags of the trails that are there. If they are wrong and you feel brave, create a login and change them.

This is exactly why openMTBmap exists, the cycling trail lines are bigger, to start with.

It is too big mount on my MTB stem (at least conveniently). I don't know how often you fall on your MTB, but the out front mount has always seemed to vulnerable to me.

this looks like a great option.

  • I had the Edge 1000 before I got the 1030. The 1030 is massivly better in staying on track while navigating in foreign country. I had no issues at all for a 4d bike trip. No matter how dense the forrest was, the 1030 kept my on track.

On the MTB, I have Glonass and GPS active.

I did more than 2000 km with Edge 1030 on MTB usage. It perfectly works for me when i upload an MTB GPX file and use the Edge 1030 to follow the route. No problem. But i also bought the Edge 1030 for it's routing capacities (round trip, trendline...) for the Edge 1030 to auto calculate MTB courses. And that really doesn't work today, whatever the maps you use : i did many tests with Garmin Cycle Map, with Freizeitkarte map, and with Garmin Topo v4 Pro map. When i say it doesn't work, it means that the calculated courses mainly goes through concrete roads. My first post to Garmin on this subject was 7 months ago now...

Indeed, the MTB routing doesn’t wrok at all. Some years ago it worked perfectly on my Garmin 1000, till I had a software update at a certain time, since than it calculate almost only big roads. I hoped the 1030 would be better, it is the same experience.

Nothing new concerning MTB routing. The one i had on my previous Edge 820 was much better !!! Really a shame ! No answer at all from Garmin since i posted messages here.
