Screen quality 1030 vs 1000

*UPDATED*
I was able to compare under sunlight today and the 1030 actually DOES look better outside. What look like dull colors inside on the 1030 actually pop better than the 1000 out just fine when viewed outdoors. I will say the 1030 screen is an improvement!

----------------------------------------
I read on DCR and a few other reviews (including here) that an advantage to the 1030 is better screen quality. Did I get a bum unit, or is this normal? WIth auto brightness I have mine next to a 1030 and the colors look dull. Also, when cranking the backlight up manually (not in these pictures) - it seems to turn all the blacks gray. I realize this is normal to an extent, but the white text doesn't seem to pop out like it does on the 1000.

*Note* - I haven't had it outside yet. Can anyone comment how it does in direct sun? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1250829.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1250830.jpg
  • The screen colors and brightness controls are design for outdoor use. I would recommend comparing them outside before making any decision. I think you will find that outdoors the 1030 is markedly better than 1000.

Thanks, this is what I was hoping to hear and it totally makes sense. The mid-west now in an overcast drizzle and probably will be for some time due to the recent tropical storms, so it's good to hear.
  • The 1030 has more of a matte finish to the screen, so it doesn't seem as bright and crisp indoors, but on the bike the 1030 is much better. Less glare and reflection than the 1000. I find the same thing with laptop computer screens: Glossy is great for watching a movie in a dark room, but matte is much better for reading documents and data.

Thanks for the replies. If the sun ever comes back out and the rain goes away I can't wait to get outside and try this. I did find a way to boot the units into test mode by holding the Start button upon power up. I'm hopefull that it looks good outside. Here is the screen test side by side (indoors). I started them at the same time so that the colors match up. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1251284.jpg
  • Whilst not the same...when I unpacked my 1030 and playing with the settings indoors, I was *REALLY* worried that I had wasted money, as the brightness of the 1030 was worse than my "old" 810. If you sit them side by side inside, the 810 is far far brighter by about 3 times (yeah, I know ...different screen type). So, I was a little concerned (read, majorly concerned), until I went out on the bike. Wow...it is far more crisper and sharper than I could ever imagine, and much better than the 810. I just leave it on "Auto brightness" and all is good, in both dull and sunny weather.

The sun came out for about 5 minutes, so I took the units outside. All I can say is the comparison COMPLETELY changed in the outside light. The greens and reds pop out just fine on the 1030, so I'm a happy camper regarding the screen! And there is less glare than with older models. :-)
  • great to here. I also was really shocked how dull the screen looks.

I'll be riding tonight to report back.

    Oh pants!

I returned my 1030 over this issue. Found the screen dull & washed out compared to my 810. The weather was rubbish so hadn't thought to try it outdoors!
I called Garmin tech who suggested I return it. The other unit in my LBS was the same so I took a refund.
A shame Garmin didn't advise me to try it outside first.
it had also frozen up on me twice just setting it up so think I might wait before I consider a replacement.
