Random Shutdowns

I received my 1030 from Sigma Sport yesterday, and it keeps turning itself off.

I went through the initial setup last night and it sat at syncing for about 10 minutes and looked like it had hung. I killed the app and plugged it into a PC to update the firmware.

Firmware update went OK, device seemed to be setup fine, I paired my sensors and it hung which required me to force a power off with the power button.

This morning I did my first ride, I turned on the device a few minutes before leaving to make sure it had a GPS fix (was quick, as expected) and put in a route to work (no full postcode search, so could only do it to the road where our office is, what's that about?).

I went to leave a few minutes later to discover the device was turned off, bit weird, turned it on again and set off.

I take an indirect route to work, so it was a great test of the routing engine, and it seemed very good, recalculating as I missed turns and suggesting generally sensible directions, very happy with that. As I went down Sawyers Hill in Richmond Park I looked down and the 1030 had turned off, I turned it on again and managed to get the tracking to continue. Slightly annoying.

I cycled on for another 10k or so and the device was flashing up messages about connecting to my iphone, then it turned off again. This time it had decided the ride was over and had saved it so I had to start a new one.

I'm not sure if the device turning off is because the storage is corrupted from the hard reset last night (very common problem on previous edge devices), early life hardware issues, or early life software, I'd guess it?s most likely software (sorry Garmin, but your S/W reputation precedes you).

Anyone else had similar experiences with the device turning off? I'll try it going home tonight without navigation to see if it's related to following a route as I guess there's a lot of new code there.
  • My 1030 (3.6) shut down mid ride on Thursday after a few weeks of trouble free use. It had not lost the ride when switched back on.
  • Not sure that it matters, but I have disabled the unused maps (I am using Aussie/NZ Garmin maps on SD card) including the basemap.
Could it be that the unit is using the map in the background and even though I am not using a course, somehow decides that if I stray off a standard road or regular route, it cant handle that?

I will try this tomorrow and see if there are any problems.

Bluetooth issues I also have (there are other threads all mentioning the same sort of problems) all seem to do with not being able to pair exclusively. There is so much interference, with other sensors ( lights / pm's / speed units) let alone radio waves and background wireless signals (5.4Hz modems??). The main thing is I have NO problems when I set it to disable the phone connection.( I recently did a 10 hr ride, with a course loaded, but with phone not used and everything worked faultlessly)

Doesn't seem to matter if there is updated Garmin Mobile, or Edge firmware versions ( we all have 3.6 now don't we?)

Isn't the whole thing though to have connection so that Relatives and friends can see where we are???

  • I'm having similar issues. Every ride since I got the device, after approximately 2h riding, it suddenly shuts down. When I discover the device is off, I turn it on again and I'm able to continue with the activity, but I've already lost few Kms on the activity file.

Please find attached my Error log.

    Any help here, master reset?
  • I have exactly same problem: each ride I get almost two or three shutdowns.
    Attached my err_log.txt
  • as per the other thread, try the 3.77 beta.

Just took mine out of the box. Had initial issues getting it to play well with my iPhone X. After those issues resolved, shut down numerous times while setting up my activity profiles. Haven't used the device yet for a ride. Has shut down about 6 times. Any resolutions???
  • The first thing I would do is check that it has the latest software on it before investing more time in trying to set it up. Use Garmin Express. The device may have been in storage or transit for sometime so may not have the latest software build. As of today that is build 3.90.

I just called to Garmin support in Finland, but they hadn't heard about this problem at all and asked me to send the device to them? So this is what you suggest? Send the device to you that you can investigate it in detail? How about investigating the device before you start selling it to paying customers?

I have been working with Tomas at Garmin to identify this problem. Please, if you haven't, submit a formal support case with Garmin. This is not an isolated problem, and the only way we will get a solution is by working within their support groups.
