First Experience - Issues with the Edge 1030

1. Grade data is grossly inaccurate on the Edge 1030. Climbs that are well known to be at 10-15% grade for over a mile register 6% or less on the 1030. I have checked the ports on the bottom side of the unit and there is no visible blockage. It was not raining during my test rides. Temperature was relatively stable. There is no case on the 1030 and the ports are not blocked by the Garmin mount or the bicycle. I confirmed the actual grade with an inclinometer and the Edge 1000. Both measure approximately the same grade while the 1030 understates significantly. And the Edge 1030 reacts to changes in grade much slower than the Edge 1000. Altitude and speed both report correctly on the Edge 1030.

2. Edge 1030 frequently disconnecting from and connecting to my iPhone 7+ during the rides. I had to turn off the alert sounds as it was getting annoying. I tried all three back jersey pockets - same issue. The Edge 1000 never exhibited this unless it was separated from the phone by approximately 30 feet or so, as would be expected.

3. Using PowerTap P1 dual pedals. Edge 1030 reports "Right power sensor missing" but it continues to report data from that sensor. This also happens on the Edge 1000 so it is not unique to the Edge 1030.

4. The display touchscreen is not sensitive enough, even with maximum sensitivity selected. I had full finger gloves on the ride today and it was difficult to select anything on the display. Shades of my experience with the Edge 820.

I will be contacting Garmin support tomorrow and will provide an update once I have spoken with them. I might have a bum unit but these sure "feel" like software issues.

  • From the above info, sounds like you ran the 1030 with backlight in Auto mode. If so, then yes the display will be dimmer while in dim surroundings.
  • I've been waiting for this unit to be released since I had my 1000 stolen at Ironman Lanza in May. I bought the 1030 on Friday 6th Oct, had that many problems with it over the weekend I took it back to my LBS today and got a refund. As well as all the problems already highlighted by so many people on this forum I didn't think the display was bright and crisp like it's claimed to be. It looked more grey and washed out and couldn't improve on it by changing the settings, I compared it to another unit when returning it to the LBS and that was just the same! Compared it to a 1000 and that screen was crystal clear. Admittedly as is normal for Garmin, all the issues will probably be corrected in future software updates but I think its poor that there is so much wrong with a unit and especially so with it being their flagship model out of the box! Think I'm going to move to another brand, Wahoo seem to be getting good reviews?!
  • Having same connection issues... so FRUSTRATING!!!!! $600+ for flagship product and I can't even keep it connected! Plus, the screen has less clarity than my 1000. What in the world is going on?
  • Same issue with connecting my Edge 1030 to my Iphone 6S running latest software IOS 11.3, difficult to connect and hold bluetooth but able to sync rides with Garmin Connect and Strava over WifI. Please Garmin fix this issue. Love the extended battery life.
  • Running s/w V 3.4
All the sensors are paired. Speed, Powermeter, HR, Varia. Mid ride it drops the HR. Startup battles to connect to ALL the sensors. So I have to manually go into the sensor menu and connect them. From there it works.

  • And the most annoying thing of all - literally ZERO acknowledgement or insight from Garmin. No transparancy on what they are fixing in next firmwares. No timeline. Nothing.

It is too bad they are about the only company making decent hardware. Hopefully the Karoo will be in a position to challenge the 1030.
  • I think the software is so complex they just can't test all use cases until it gets into 1000s of people's hands.

Does Garmin test devices manually or do they use an automated test rig with a machine triggering the touch screen?

Agree, Garmin’s lack of response to all of these issues is disturbing, as are the rude Garmin Admin types on here regularly blaming users for their issues.
  • We apricate the continued discussion and apologize for the frustrations but we have acknowledged issues reported here in post #5 and #7 of the thread. We are working to address issues and will report back when we have a resolution

Thanks SJT70, I do appreciate the response.

Looking forward to when the 1030 is fit to (re)purchase :-)

I liked the screen size and particularly the mapping, a very big didsapointment that nothing else seemed to work reliably.

    I’m sure it will eventually.
