First Experience - Issues with the Edge 1030

1. Grade data is grossly inaccurate on the Edge 1030. Climbs that are well known to be at 10-15% grade for over a mile register 6% or less on the 1030. I have checked the ports on the bottom side of the unit and there is no visible blockage. It was not raining during my test rides. Temperature was relatively stable. There is no case on the 1030 and the ports are not blocked by the Garmin mount or the bicycle. I confirmed the actual grade with an inclinometer and the Edge 1000. Both measure approximately the same grade while the 1030 understates significantly. And the Edge 1030 reacts to changes in grade much slower than the Edge 1000. Altitude and speed both report correctly on the Edge 1030.

2. Edge 1030 frequently disconnecting from and connecting to my iPhone 7+ during the rides. I had to turn off the alert sounds as it was getting annoying. I tried all three back jersey pockets - same issue. The Edge 1000 never exhibited this unless it was separated from the phone by approximately 30 feet or so, as would be expected.

3. Using PowerTap P1 dual pedals. Edge 1030 reports "Right power sensor missing" but it continues to report data from that sensor. This also happens on the Edge 1000 so it is not unique to the Edge 1030.

4. The display touchscreen is not sensitive enough, even with maximum sensitivity selected. I had full finger gloves on the ride today and it was difficult to select anything on the display. Shades of my experience with the Edge 820.

I will be contacting Garmin support tomorrow and will provide an update once I have spoken with them. I might have a bum unit but these sure "feel" like software issues.
  • I have all of these issues with my 1030. Taking it back to my LBS on Monday for a refund. It didn't work with gloves on at all!!
  • Ok here's a new problem - my new Shimona 9170 Groupset on my S Works Roubaix does not connect to my Garmin Edge 1030 properly through an I phone 7 plus and the bike's computer system shuts down and needs to be started again. Works perfectly with the Garmin edge 1000 and Fenix 5 x. Garmin need to get its act together and treat its paying customers appropriately!

Some manufacturers make "Touchscreen-compatible" gloves. I have several such long-fingered gloves by Pearl Izumi and navigating the touchscreen with them works (sensitivity set to "high").

    • When I open Garmin Express and I plug it in to my MacBook the 1030 shows in my list of devices but I get an error message saying it has failed to sync.
    • It fails to be recognised by my MacBook. I have to turn off Bluetooth on my phone for it to be recognised. Having previously added the 1030 to my Garmin Express, the 1030 is not there and I have to use ?Add a Device? again. The 1030 is recognised and then GE asks me to log in (why do I have to log in?) - that works and it says that the device is registered to my email address (this is the 4th time it has said this!).
    • Turned Bluetooth on iPhone and plugged in to MacBook. MacBook recognised 1030 but GE reports ?An unexpected error has occurred and Garmin Express must close. If you continue to experience this, contact Garmin customer support.? Unplugged 1030. Plugged in 1030 - MacBook fails to recognise. Unplugged 1030. Plugged in 1030 - MacBook fails to recognise. Turned off BT on iPhone. Plugged in 1030 - took 30sec to recognise, get GE error again. GE crashes. Restart GE, 1030 not there. Would have to add it again which presumably means re-registering it. This is obviously broken. Not worth trying to register as it will fail ad infinitum. Waiting for Garmin customer support...

    and
    • Took several attempts to set up
    • First ride set date to 15 Aug whereas it was 21 Sept
    • Froze on Controls>Stop Battery Save Mode. Cannot turn it off (depressed on/off switch for 15s!). Finally turned off, but it came back on automatically.
    • Will not synch wirelessly - ride does not appear in Garmin or Strava. It has connected to phone and states ?Download complete? in the status bar at the top but no synching. Update - having synced it to my MacBook it now uploads rides automatically.
    • When activity profile set to ?Timer Start Mode>Auto? - a ride starts without any activity i.e. with the unit sitting on the table. Have to delete ride, then back to settings, then a new ride starts ad infinitum. Decided to turn ?Timer Start? to manual - Pain!
    • Cadence sensor not recognised on ride after setting it up
    • Heart rate sensor not recognised at all - been out for several rides, no joy.
  • I have experienced a different problem with the Edge 1030 relating to distance. I rode 187km with two friends at the weekend. One used an Edge 1000 and the other a Wahoo Bolt. My recorded distance was 182km while my friends both recorded 187km. My Activity was uploaded to Strava via Garmin and Strava reported the distance as 186.9km. The official course route was also 187km. Any suggestions as to why the Edge 1030 miscalculated the distance?
  • If you have Auto Pause turned on, it is possible that the Edge 1030 stopped recording when you were merely going slowly but not stopped. This would shorten the distance reported on the 1030. Strava calculates distance slightly differently than Garmin in that they measure point to point along the route travelled regardless of whether the 1030 is paused. This would increase the distance from that recorded on the 1030.

I suggest turning Auto Pause OFF.

  • Hi Gaijin, Thank you for your feedback. I do use auto pause on the Edge 1030 and I used it also on my Edge 1000 which never miscalculated distances vs Strava. Oddly most of the pauses on the specific ride I mentioned were at traffic lights getting out of London near the Velodrome to Epping. The auto detect speed to continue recording is set at 4.8km/h on both my Edge 1000 and 1030 which is why I have been suspicious that this might be a 1030 specific issue. Also a loss of almost 5km is rather a lot and I am sure I would have noticed given I tend to watch my Garmin a lot as I ride with a power meter. Having said that I will turn auto pause off on the 1030 and see what happens. Thank you again for responding to my post.

  • $600 and it cannot even complete the phone pairing sequence?

(I have an iPhone 6+ updated to the latest iOS release and likewise to the latest Garmin Connect Mobile app.

This is immensely frustrating. I bought this solely because of the mechanical failure of the polymer covering over the power button on the Edge 1000 and the ensuing failure of the underlying components, despite my diligent attempts to treat them with delicate care.

The reviews for the Edge 1030 sounded good and I thought I?d go for an upgrade?

What I have, so far, is not even functional, let alone an ?upgrade.?

Addendum: Big surprise, their forum software can?t handle non-ASCII characters. Most of those oddly placed question marks are things like ellipses (...) or directional (left vs. right) quote marks.

    Addendum 2:

I finally worked out the solution for the 2nd Bluetooth pairing: Press the blue Start button at the bottom of the pairing screen and just wait until your phone shows up there (it can take a while) then tap its name.

I've decided to return my 1030 as the 30 day window is about to close. I'll be going back to my 1000 for now.
The 1030 was really nice in regard to the screen size. Honestly the 1/2 inch made a really welcomed difference, as the device itself isn't noticeably bigger.
In the end, the color contrast was just not good. As mentioned in other threads, it looks fine under sunlight.
However I make my own custom maps for mountain biking. They use a green background and red lines, and shaded contour. Once I got into the woods for a long ride I actually found myself pulling out my cell phone to use MTBProject, as I was having trouble reading the maps. If the device is in shade (in the woods), there far too little color contrast. The greens almost look grayscale (as I've posted pictures in an older thread) and the reds don't stand out very well.
Don't get my wrong - it is useable if you use the stock maps, especially under sunlight. But I'll take the better colors in shaded areas and a slightly smaller screen. Especially considering the cost of upgrading from a 1000.

Regarding phone syncing...when mine was brand new it wouldn't stay connected. I did a factory reset and I've had zero issues connecting to my phone or sensors.
However, the ride upload feature is extremely wonky. I open Garmin Connect on my phone once the ride is done, and it shows connected. I try to sync from my phone, and the sync works, but the ride doesn't upload. I try uploading from the 1030 and every time it says 'upload failed'. I can reset both devices, open garmin connect and stand on my head...still fails. But then anywhere from 30 seconds to 15 minutes later, the ride will magically upload itself. So keeping the Edge running for a bit seems to work,,.tho it shouldn't be necessary.

It's good to see others getting the expected battery life. However I'm getting about half. I will disconnect the phone while riding, and just pair up a speed / cadence sensor and ride with auto brightness in the woods. I get about 10% per hour (5 hour ride took me down from 95% to 45%). Perhaps turning the backlight up to 100% and using a 30 second timeout would help, as opposed to auto.

In the end, the contrast in shaded areas isn't something a firmware change is going to address. I'm not writing this to complain, but rather so that others might take into consideration some of the pros / cons. Aside from the contrast, I'm sure the other issues will be worked out in a future release, as they were with the 1000.
