First Experience - Issues with the Edge 1030

1. Grade data is grossly inaccurate on the Edge 1030. Climbs that are well known to be at 10-15% grade for over a mile register 6% or less on the 1030. I have checked the ports on the bottom side of the unit and there is no visible blockage. It was not raining during my test rides. Temperature was relatively stable. There is no case on the 1030 and the ports are not blocked by the Garmin mount or the bicycle. I confirmed the actual grade with an inclinometer and the Edge 1000. Both measure approximately the same grade while the 1030 understates significantly. And the Edge 1030 reacts to changes in grade much slower than the Edge 1000. Altitude and speed both report correctly on the Edge 1030.

2. Edge 1030 frequently disconnecting from and connecting to my iPhone 7+ during the rides. I had to turn off the alert sounds as it was getting annoying. I tried all three back jersey pockets - same issue. The Edge 1000 never exhibited this unless it was separated from the phone by approximately 30 feet or so, as would be expected.

3. Using PowerTap P1 dual pedals. Edge 1030 reports "Right power sensor missing" but it continues to report data from that sensor. This also happens on the Edge 1000 so it is not unique to the Edge 1030.

4. The display touchscreen is not sensitive enough, even with maximum sensitivity selected. I had full finger gloves on the ride today and it was difficult to select anything on the display. Shades of my experience with the Edge 820.

I will be contacting Garmin support tomorrow and will provide an update once I have spoken with them. I might have a bum unit but these sure "feel" like software issues.
  • Check out DC Rainmakers post from today about a ride he did. He mentions the grade issue with grades over about 6% are registering at about half the grade. Garmin is aware of it.
  • Thanks - just saw that in Ray's 1030 review comments. Hopefully it is a software bug Garmin will update shortly. Not that the grade is terribly important information - steep is steep no matter what the Edge says. :)
  • Called Garmin and reported my findings. The support person I spoke with was unaware of the Grade issue - probably because there are only a few early adopters using the Edge 1030 and not everyone rides in the mountains all the time like me. :) I suggested he mention DC Rainmaker's finding on this same issue to his support team since someone at Garmin should already be aware of it. The support person did confirm one problem I have been experiencing - my phone connects and disconnects during a ride. I have tried all three jersey pockets, same result. He said that several Edge 1030 users have reported the inability to pair with their smartphones as well as frequent dropouts after pairing. I have an iPhone 7+ which supposedly has one of the better Bluetooth antennas (confirmed by my experience with various Bluetooth in-ear buds).

As for the other symptoms I reported (P1 "Right power sensor missing" and touchscreen sensitivity) he said he had not heard of these yet and he would enter them into their support system.
  • We have reported grade issues to our engineering teams for investigation. Apologies for the confusion on the support side.
  • Can confirm the frequent connection drops between my 1030 and Note5 whereas my 520 NEVER dropped the link.....come on Garmin, this is your "flagship" cycling computer. You can and should do better!
  • I have reported the phone pairing concerns to our engineering teams as well. I will update the thread once we have more information

Also can verify the grade issue. Was riding with 4 other garmin users (not 1030) and my 1030 never reported grade above 6, while theirs approached 20%.

Also way off on temperature--by 10 degrees too warm. Has frozen a couple of times, but paired with multiple sensors, lights and Di2 pretty well. No problem on sensitivity, but creating activity profiles is awkward and easy to accidentally delete a work in progress.
  • I?ve had the same issues as reported above. I have a few bikes and a mix of SRAM etap, DI2, Bontrager Duo, Vector 2 pedals, radar lights, etc. What a nightmare trying to get them all connected ! Had no such problems with my Edge 1000. I?ve had serious issues connecting my iPhone 7+, drop outs and complete refusal to connect after ?succesful? pairing. I rode 100km yesterday and the 1030 crashed twice. It came back to life on its own but refused to connect to power meter, radar etc. I stopped and disabled then renabled all devices and they worked fine after that. I actually love the unit and think it?s much better than the 1000. The problem is I feel like a beta tester. I am sure these issues will be sorted by future software upgrades but I resent being the guinea pig. How does a premium unit like this get to market with these problems still existing ? Surely whoever tested the unit will have done so with multiple bike setups and various Bluetooth/Ant+ components ? I?m also disappointed that performance metrics don?t sync with my running watch (FR935) - again something I?m sure will be fixed in time.
  • And who is still denying that Garmin buyers are used to perform beta-testing of unfinished product while Garmin even gets paid for that!?
  • never heard of such a thing ;)
