Phone Connection issues

My 1030 arrived. I installed the firmware update 3.2 Running Android 8 on a Google Pixel.
The phone connected at first. Sometimes it connects fine upon booting. Other times I will have to keep rebooting the 1030 to get the bluetooth to reconnect to my phone. Other times this doesn't work and I have to remove my 1030 within Garmin Connect and re-assign the device (it then shows up again and eventually runs back into connection issues). I'm not having issues connecting my phone to other devices at the moment...
I was hoping to find this may be a software thing before I think about returning / exchanging.
I'm pretty sure the 1030 is not 'Discoverable' until you remove the connection and set it back up, so I'm not sure what other troubleshooting can be done. Meaning, I don't see a way to manually connect it through Android settings without removing and reconnecting in Garmin Connect.
Has anybody else ran into this?
--EDIT-- Rebooted the Edge a few more times and it connected once again. The prevous times I left it sit for 10 minutes without connection.
  • Per DCR try this:

For totally re-setting connections on the Edge 1030, be sure to complete the following:

    A) Remove pairing on Edge 1030
    B) Remove BLE pairing on settings on phone
    C) Remove BT pairing on settings on phone
    D) Delete Edge 1030 from Garmin Connect Mobile
    E) Airplane mode on
    F) Kill/close GCM app

    Then start from fresh.

I believe he is referencing iPhone as the Edge will only have one BT connection on Android but I assume the procedure would work on Android as well.
  • i see the same issue
when i initially pair the device with my phone everything is perfect but when i starts the device again it wont pair with the phone
  • Tried the DCR procedure. It sets up the connection but once you try riding, there is no connection even though the 1030 is searching for the phone and it is cm away from it. Even when you go into Garmin Connect Mobile, it will find the phone but won't sync. It is really amazing that the screwed this up. What this really means is that all the new communications features they added to the 1030 don't work. Not a smart move when you are touting this as a reason to buy.

I've been testing this more today and i believe the issue may have to do with WiFi and Bluetooth at the same time. i booted it today and no phone connection...just searching. I then turned OFF the Wifi connection on the Edge. Still no Phone connection, so I rebooted the Edge. It immediately connected to my phone. I rebooted 4 times and each time it connected to my phone just fine with wifi disabled. i re-enabled Wifi and the phone stayed connected untl i rebooted the Edge. Then once again, no phone connection. Perhaps during the random times yesterday when it did work, the phone happened to connect before the Wifi. I'll keep testing this. Can anybody else verify the same behavior? If so, perhaps a ticket needs to be raised. If this is the cause, I'll just leave Wifi off until needed or until a fix comes out.
  • I have reported these concerns to our engineering teams for investigation. I will update the thread once we have more information.

Thanks for that. Can you note this appears to be two parts:
    1. If the unit boots up with WIFI enabled, the phone hesitates to connect at all.
-and what appears to be a separate issue, even with WIFI disabled so that the phone does connect:...
    2. Frequent disconnect / reconnects to the phone.

If there is any confirmation as to weather it is hardware or software related, please let us know. As the return window comes closer, I may return the 1030 if a cause hasn't been found.

Is there any word if this is hardware / software? I saw DCR comment on a beta firmware to address the gradient issue; I wonder if this addresses connectivity? After a factory reset I can at least have wifi enabled without preventing the phone from connecting.
I had a buddy put his Edge (3.2 firmware) next to mine on a table and connected it to my phone. I watched his eventually drop connection while my edge stayed connected to the same phone, which never left the table. As the return window closes in I find myself looking more at the Karoo but hesitate since I haven't seen any 'real world' use.
  • I hate to be in the "me too" camp, but my Android (Samsung S8) and 1030 seem to be on some mission to disconnect each other. I have tried disabling wifi, I have tried the Rainmaker "fix"...neither have worked. About every 2nd or 3rd time I turn on the 1030, it will have not BT connection to my phone, and I have to go through the whole re-pairing process again. VERY tedious.
Thankfully, I have never had it drop out ON a ride....just when turning on and it will randomly not connect to the phone.
  • It could be a security setting on the phone. The app really needs to be left loaded and running. If you find the Edge is not connected, what happens if you go to the phone and open the app up? Does the Edge then suddenly get a connection?

That may not be a very good option. On the iPhone, the app is a real battery drain when on (at least with iOS 10, not sure on iOS11). I have also encountered instances when the phone gets really warm when the app is on. Now, that winter is coming, that could be useful as you wouldn't need a dedicate hand/pocket warmer, you could just turn on the app and viola, instant hand warmer!
