First Ride Review

Some items I noticed today after a road ride and a trainer ride:
  • Screen seemed much crisper than the 1000. I have to note I have a screen protector on the 1000 that may dull things but the choice of fonts on the 1030 seemed less bulky. Sounds trivial but made the screen easier to read. Screen shot attached.
  • The new segment screen is nice. I hit a segment today where I improved by personal best. Once I was running ahead of my best it added to the screen the segment leaders time. Was nice to see both.
  • Edge will connect with the Varia HUD however the Varia will stop updating fields randomly. You can still swipe between screens they are just not updating. Rebooting the HUD and connecting fixed it the first time however after the second timed I could not connect. In addition, when it was working the grade on the HUD was wrong, would say negative when I was climbing at times and values seemed to max out at +/- 2%.
  • With the start/stop and lap buttons moved to the perimeter of the unit I found it hard to hit the lap button with the unit mounted to my K Edge mount. Going to pull the Garmin mount out and look to see if it gives more clearance. You can see the clearance in the photo somewhat.
  • The new performance summary screen is a nice progression from the 1000. Although it did say I needed 72 hours to recover from my not so hard 22 mile ride this morning. I think I recall reading something that it takes a few rides for the unit to fine tune its calculations to your body.
  • Did not try to navigate anywhere today however I did play with that the other night while in the car and had things set to car driving mode. Unit did not want me to be on the freeway/highway. Hopefully the road bike profile has more success. The 1000 would drive me nuts by always trying to take me on the most obscure back roads with lots of turns when there was a viable road that was more direct.

  • Thanks for the review. How are you finding the battery usage?
one of my reasons for getting a 1030 (which is on pre order, delivery end of Oct (ugh)) is that my 520 is now using around 19% per hour. I'm hoping the 1030 is significantly better.
  • 2nd road ride observations:
    • After about a 1.5 hour ride the unit appears to have consumed about 6% per hour. Connected were: Garmin HR strap, Bontrager Speed/Cadence Sensor, iPhone running Connect app and a Powertap G3 hub.
    • Did not use the Varia HUD. Looked last night to see if there was an update I was missing and found none.
    • The recovery adviser alert beeped however the actual screen never appeared. Guess I wont know how well I recovered from yesterdays ride where it said I needed 72 hours.
    • At the end of today's ride it said I only need 68 hours to recover. I appear to be getting stronger much faster than I realized!
    • At the end of the ride after hitting the stop button there is no discard button as there was on the 1000 and other units.
    • On a segment today I pulled ahead of my personal best. Next thing I know there is a beep that the virtual partner had finished. Once I finally reached the end of the segment it showed I was 45 seconds behind my personal best. Upon looking at the ride on Connect it shows that I set a personal best today.
  • Any ride above 5 minutes will not have a discard option, under that it gives the option on the end screen.
  • The recovery advisory is a learnt metric and the unit needs about a weeks worth of data before it starts to giving useful values.
  • Third ride in. Unit working great with the exception of the items noted above. Only new issue today is that about 45 minutes into the ride I paused for about 5 minutes. I did not hit stop on Edge, just let auto pause engage. When I resumed riding the Edge would not connect to the PT G3 hub. I tried deleting the sensor and repairing however would not find it. After my ride I rebooted the Edge and it found the PT immediately. Not sure if in my stop the PT went to sleep and the Edge refused to reconnect or if something else was up.

Unbelievably, what aggravation improvement; now you have to use the Garmin mount that slightly increases the Edge mount. And the expensive and beautiful mounts of the Edge 1000, in the extension of the stem, can be thrown in the trash.

If it is the case that the button placement is actually making it difficult for people to access them with an out front mount either garmin has dropped an ergonomic bollock with the design or its a cunning marketing ploy to get people to buy a remote.
Personally I can't understand why they've chosen to put them where they are even the L&R sides would have been better. It'll be even more difficult if you use a silicone case.
I can only guess its for manufacturing reasons & not the woolly garmin response to dcr that it was to keep the form factor as small as possible.
  • @hotdogpartysausage
You can now reach the keys with your thumb without letting go of the handlebars, was a statement by Garmin
  • Finally got around to putting the Garmin out front mount on the bike. Turns out it is no longer than the K Edge. Guess we will need to wait for K Edge to come out of a "new" longer mount.
