Swim 2 newbie - how to track kick sets

I just received my Swim 2 yesterday and set it up as best as I could. It wasn't totally unfamiliar, since I have been using a Vivosmart HR for years. I gave it a try today with 2 400-yard kick sets in a 25 yard pool. Yes, I went out of my way to do a strong push-off after each length. Time and heart rate worked just fine. Distance and calories were ZERO. How does the Swim 2 determine pool swim distance? Is it able to track a kick set? Thanks much! Don P
