Garmin Swim 2 display options in the pool

I am very interested in purchasing the Garmin Swim 2. But I have some questions for my in pool needs that I cannot find answers to in the Owner's Manual or on this forum. Can the Swim 2 display Lengths, so I no longer have to count? It is my understanding from reading the Owner's Manual that it defaults to display Distance, which I can adjust to, but can the Swim 2 be set to display Lengths/Laps realtime in the pool?

Additionally, SWOLF is one of my favorite drills. But I NEED to be able to view the SWOLF score after each set so that I can create Negative sets. Does the Swim 2 display realtime SWOLF scores in the pool, or is it only available on the Garmin Connect app?

Lastly, I don't Run anymore, but I do Walk. Many reviews have described how poorly this watch functions outside the pool. I previously owned a VivoActiveHR which tracked my walking well (before I went swimming with it and it TANKED!) Can the Swim 2 track Walking as well as the other Garmin Smartwatches? Is there an app on Garmin Connect that is available for Walking?

Thank you in advance.

PS I originally got my VivoActiveHR to also provide HR date to my sleep tracking app. Will the Swim 2 track Sleep with HR data?

  • I don't know which reviews you've read or watched, but some of your questions are answered here:

    Sorry, I don't have a Swim 2, so I cannot offer first-hand opinion.

  • I appreciate the quick answer. Unfortunately, as I stated I have done some homework and since I only asked 4 questions, your links don't provide answers.

Is there anyone on this forum that is currently using a Swim 2 in the pool and for swim tracking with the Garmin Connect app that can answer my fairly specific questions?

  • From one of the link above...

Timer Fields: Timer, Swim Time, Interval Time, Elapsed Time
    Distance Fields: Distance, Interval Distance
Pace Fields: Average Pace (whole workout), Interval Pace, Last Length Pace
Heart Rate Fields: Heart Rate (current), Average HR (whole workout), HR Zone, Aerobic Training Effect, Anaerobic Training Effect, HR %Max, % Heart Rate Reserve, Avg. HR %Max, Avg. %HRR, Int Avg HR, Int Avg %HRR, Int Avg %Max, Int Max HR, Int Max %HR, Int Max. %Max, Time in Zone
Stroke Fields: Interval Stroke Type, Last Length Stroke Type, Last Length Strokes, Average Strokes per Length, Interval Strokes per Length
    Length Fields: Lengths, Interval Lengths
Swolf Fields: Average Swolf, Interval Swolf, Last Length Swolf
Rest Fields: Rest Timer, Repeat On
Other Fields: Calories, Time of Day, Intervals

    That means:

    - Yes, it can display lengths during the swim (interval or total). Please note that there is an active bug which makes the total length count unusable on the fly - increasing at about every 11th length - I hope Garmin will correct it, at least I reported them this. However total length is displayed correctly at each rest interval, so at resting you can check. Interval lengths is correct on the fly, so you can check it after each turn if you want.

    - Yes, it can display SWOLF (total, average, last length). I think that it fits your needs. I can not comment how good it is, as I do not use this metrics

    - Note, that on the watch you can see only the last lap/length depending on the data field, but you can not scroll further back during the swim. After you finish and save the activity, you can scroll for more details, but that details are VERY LIMITED, and there is some bug making it even worse to read. So I recommend to analyze the data only on GC after swim.

    - for me the watch tracks well both in and off the water (however in the water I have to wear it on my right wrist to have a correct track - but in that case it is perfect). The GPS chip is from Sony, make a search about that. Some people complain about track issues, I have no problems at all.

    - You can not add walk activity, use run or cardio. There are only limited amount of activities what you can use (Swim pool, Swim OW, bike, run, cardio), and you can not install any more or different apps. I found bike, run and cardio activity EQUAL, just cardio has not GPS on by default. You can not add any additional sensor just HRM. You can change the activity type on GC if you want.

    - Sleep tracking with HR data works on Swim2. However I am not sure if it notices the different sleep stages well (that is true for ALL of Garmin devices)

    - Note, that nap tracking does not work on Swim2, so you need a long sleep to be noticed and recorded.

  • PG,

Thanks for the informative reply. I am new to Garmin Forums, so I apologize for my naivete. I guess I was hoping for more than 2 responses. I was expecting responses from actual Garmin Swim 2 users since it is a Garmin Swim 2 thread. I do not expect each response to necessarily answer each of my questions, but I am disappointed there is no swimmer on this forum using SWOLF scores in the pool.

Basically, after thinking about this purchase and using my existing Timex Ironman, I am hoping to relieve myself from counting lengths or laps. (I personally count lengths because I always know which end of the pool is even and which is odd.) This being stated – what I hope from a swim tracker is the ability to track my Interval Distance and Timing, and my real-time Heart Rate. I warm up with a 500yd swim, which is 20 lengths in my 25 yard pool. Some days this is my longest interval, but I try to swim a mile at least 1 day a week, which means keeping track of 70 lengths!

I wear glasses, but I do not have prescription goggles. I can view the large display on my Timex Ironman thru my goggles, but only out of the water at the end of an interval. I would love to be able to customize my display to HR/Time/Length and have it be large enough that I can read it – if not while I am swimming at least while I am at the end of a length. I have read numerous reviews, including DCRainmaker’s and I have read the owner’s manual. This is why I am asking these questions on this forum.

I predict 90% of my “Tracking” will be done actually in the pool or just thereafter. I will enjoy seeing all of the data mentioned above on a few of my swims, but I don’t anticipate myself spending more time tracking than swimming. As I mentioned in the OP, I do like to swim intervals with negative splits in both Timing and SWOLF Scores. So I am hoping for example I can swim a 4x100 Free and after each 100 note my time and SWOLF Score. It is my understanding from the previous post that after my second 100 I will not be able to see my first 100 SWOLF Score. (Will I be able to see my first 100 time?) So I will have to just remember the SWOLF Score from the last 100 in order to compare it to the current 100. This is fine. If I really want to see all the splits and confirm they are negative for both Time and SWOLF, I understand I can view them in Garmin Connect.

Will I be able to do the above with a Garmin Swim 2?

  • Bump. Is there anyone on this forum that is able to answer my questions?

  • No, you may not go backwards in the middle of a workout. You may go after to Garmin connect where you can find all the information you want. Do you really need to do a deep analysis within your workout? If yes, get a coach!

  • No need to be judgmental Paolo. I mentioned nothing about a Deep Dive during a workout.

You and I have different swimming workouts. Let's respect that.
