Forerunner 970 - What is going on with this latest update?

Hey all, Not sure if anyone else is having these same issues but there has been a string of items with the latest update.

1. Text messages notifications have stopped coming through the watch. I checked my settings, I still get calls and other apps on the watch but texts have been muted for some reason.

2. My watch face just says IQ with an orange exclamation point (Hexcellent watch face). It does this when waking up on gesture many times and then sits for about 10 seconds before it finally kicks on my watch face. This happens intermittently and not every time, which leads me to believe it's not a watch face issue rather than an issue with the watch itself.

3. Waking the watch up from being asleep, either by gesture or by tapping the screen causes the watch to freeze for a few seconds. Sometimes this can be one to two seconds other times it can be as much as 10-15 seconds. Again this is another intermittent item, some times it wakes immediately other times I have to wonder if my watch somehow turned itself off cause it takes so long to respond.

4. Lastly, don't even try to turn your light on when the watch face is off. If you double tap your wake-up button to use the LED light shortcut, it's about 50:50 if the light turns on or the watch goes through a boot cycle cause it crashed so hard.

Please Garmin figure this stuff out. This is incredibly frustrating to have a 750$ watch only to be hindered when trying to use some of the smart features.

  • I'm quite unsatisfied with my FR 970, which is now coming back from Garmin after some glue came out from the bezel. I wonder whether the replacement will be a new unit or a refurbished one.

In my case, throughout all the firmware updates I’ve experienced the following issues, all probably related to the CPU not being able to handle everything properly:

    1. During a run, if I stopped the activity and tried to resume it quickly, it wouldn’t respond (typical situation: stopping at a red light that immediately turns green).

    2. Countdown beeps during workouts sound at irregular intervals. Sometimes I've seen the counter to count every 2 seconds lol.

    3. The metronome seems to be off as well.

    4. When entering sleep mode, the next time you wake the watch it takes several seconds to show the screen.

    5. You can make it crash just by spamming the power button to turn the light on/off.

    6. Overall UI navigation is laggy, especially when using maps.

    7. and more...

While waiting for the FR 970 to come back, I’ve been using my old FR 255 and it feels much smoother in all these aspects. It's feeling like an upgrade in terms of user experience. I think I’m going to keep using it and try to get rid of the FR 970.

  • Contact Garmin. There is a chance you have bad hardware. Mine used to crash/reboot at random times. *** I had a reboot right before my corral was ready to start and I remember a reboot when I ended my long run. Lucky for me the watch came back on before we started the run and it also didn't lose the run after my long run. I called Garmin, talked to someone, and they determined my watch was faulty. They sent me out a new one and it has been perfect ever since.

  • I am not satisfied with this FR970. It is good when you use the simple functions suche as track a run with time pace and distance, or interval training using one data page; if I set two or more data pages, even with the touch screen blocked and no auto scroll, the pages change randomly. If you add MAP navigation, it is a big mess, I experienced crashes and in general I am not able to control my screen during a run.

This FR is much more a smart watch with a nice brilliant screen than a sport watch and I am thinking to go back to something simpler and more intuitive after 20 years of GARMIN
