Can't get touchscreen to work with maps on Forerunner 970

My display & brightness settings have touch On and Touch Lock Off.

My activity focus mode has Touch On and Touch Lock Off.

My map settings are set to use "System settings".

I'm running software version 12.72

The touch screen works totally fine but as soon as I open the generic Maps activity the touchscreen is no longer on. I can't pan and zoom like the 970 manual suggests and the dropdown menu on the maps page also does not respond to touch.

Is there another setting I'm missing?

I tried deleting all the Topomaps and then re-installing from Garmin Express but that didn't fix things for me.

I also tried a force software reinstall (Settings -> About -> Click light button 8x and then select reinstall) and this didn't fix things for me.

I tried a cache reset (plugging phone into computer, manually powering watch off, and waiting 1 minute) and this didn't fix things.

Support today was able to make a ticket for me.

  • Or I guess you could:

    - reset to factory

    - get default map fit file

    - restore from backup

    - copy default map fit file over

That would be easier. Only thing is you might have to re-pair sensors and re-enter wifi passwords.

  • ok I attached here, thank you! part of me wonders if it's not in this file, if it's in another settings file somewhere bc I actually did make sure the maps was set to Touch ON before I did the 955 backup this latest round.

(removed file bc this is the broken one)

  • Ohh i can try that too. I'm slightly worried i'll somehow overwrite my 970 backup with a backup of a fresh install, I'll copy my Sport/ now just in case.

  • I've never had Garmin support leave me hanging like this, they've been ghosting me since last week when I said I didn't want to do a full hard reset. (I also explained *why* I didn't want to do it, and asked for alternative approaches).

  • This worked!!! Thank you!

No worries! Glad it worked for you.

I can also tell you that I opened your attached file in fitfileviewer.com, and confirmed touch was disabled in the map activity settings:

Don't ask me why this is the case even though you enabled touch for the same activity on FR955.

I've never had Garmin support leave me hanging like this, they've been ghosting me since last week when I said I didn't want to do a full hard reset.

Yeah bc in their minds they gave you a solution and you didn't want to take it. Plus you arrived at this situation by doing something that isn't really supported from their POV. Luckily Garmin devices are open enough that you had this workaround. I'm sure if Garmin started out as a company today, there would be zero access to the file system for anything like this.

  • I must be missing something, how is this not supported from their POV?

The default flow when you setup the new watch prompts you to restore from a backup so that your settings are preserved. I thought I was doing everything by the book, it's how i upgraded to the 955 from the 945 as well.

  • I must be missing something, how is this not supported from their POV?

Oh ok my bad. I thought that you're not supposed to restore a backup from a different model of watch. I mean, yeah, technically you're allowed to do so, but it seems that people are always saying that it's not recommended.

To be fair to Garmin, it's nice that they allow you to do so. However, clearly they haven't tested all combos of old devices/settings and new devices.

To criticize Garmin, since they do allow you to restore a backup from a different model of watch (in fact they seem to prompt you to do so), then they should either support it properly or not.

Then I guess I'll just say that support gave you a solution that's good from their POV and they're not interested in pursuing it further. Hey, just be glad you got a real person and not a chatbot (I hope).

  • 8156.GenericMap.fit.zipthis is the first time I've heard anyone saying it's not recommended, i was surprised to read that above, it just feels like it's so front and center when you go through the setup process
There's no text during setup that warns against selecting an old backup, the flow is something like "do you want to restore your settings" and then if you click yes you get brought to a page that showed my only backup of a 955 and I just selected it and proceeded.

I actually thought the main use case for having the backup restore was setting transfer during watch upgrade lol
Good news is if anyone else has this issue they can use the attached default maps profile (unzip it first) and just drop it in their NewFiles/ folder (also change the file name to GenericMap.fit after you unzip it, i'm not sure why the file uploader added the 8156. to the front of the file name).
  • Yeah well then it sounds like it's a Garmin problem, as per usuge. I feel like if they did anything at all to "fix" this kind of problem, it wouldn't be to test all those combos of old devices/settings and new devices, but just to take away the ability to restore a backup from a different model.
