smart wake alarm not working

Watch on 12.70, and I tried the new smart alarm

I've set up a normal alarm with sound and vibration before - works fine
When the smart alarm doesn't trigger the half hour before the set time, it also makes sound and vibrates.
But if it's triggered and the smart alarm goes off within the half hour before, it stays silent and only vibrates once - basically doing nearly nothing with the purpose of a working alarm.
(The same with the repetition 10min later)

Idk if this has something to do with the active sleep focus mode via the set up plan until my 'latest wakeup time', but when testing a normal alarm with a manually activated sleep focus mode during the day, it has the expected behavior with sound+vibration.

Obviously, I can't trigger this issue manually, and so I can only report back on future observations.

  • I though that was how it was supposed to work. Once I got the update, and setup my first smart alarm, i get a vibration on my watch prior to my actual alarm time. I figured I were close enough to wake up the vibration would be enough to wake me up.

I still get the full vibrate and sound at the correct time if I didn't wake from the vibration.

  • Okay, I've just checked the official documentation and a video from Garmin, and this behavior seems to be intended.

Nevertheless, I think if it confidently detects that someone is nearly awake, it shall trigger the full alarm (vibration+sound) early.
With such 'gentle attempts', I'll probably just keep sleeping restlessly instead of getting up. (my opinion)

    TLDR: it's a feature, not a bug

  • I hear ya. It is a strange feeling. Sometimes I feel it, sometimes I don't. I figure that I am just not close enough to wake up. As long at it goes off a the right time, even when the vibration doesn't wake me, I am happy enough.
