Answer calls on headphones

I had a forerunner 945lte and just got the 970. It's cool I can take calls on the watch but really I would never do that.

What i did on my 945 lte and want to do on 970 is answer the call on my watch and use my headphones.

I typically play my music from headphones paired with my phone as Spotify won't sync and its a hassle.

  • Pair Headphones to Phone Only: The most reliable way to ensure calls come through your headphones is to keep them paired only to your phone. The watch will still show the incoming call notification, and you can accept it on the watch, but the audio will go to the phone, which will then send it to the headphones. The only downside is you won't get activity audio prompts from the watch through the headphones in this setup

That's not true. My headphones are paired that way and the calls still go to watch.

I often have touch response turned off my headphones because hoodies trigger the touch.

I'm not sure why you're so set on defending this. What's needed is an option in the watch to configure the desired behavior.

Do you work for garmin? You haven't been adding anything productive to the conversation.

Answer on Watch, Switch on Phone: If you answer on the watch, you will need to manually switch the audio source on your smartphone's call screen from the "
    Garmin 970
" (or similar HFP listing) to your headphones

Clunky and not equal to previous experience.

  • No  I don't work for Garmin, I just don't complain about smart watch features on sports watches as that's not the watch is for. It's a sports watch with some/limited smart features. I wasn't defending the feature I was trying to find answers for you instead of just moaning about something that worked on an old watch but not on your new one.  All the instructions I can find through multiple means give you work arounds which I put in this thread for you which is more productive than just complaining as that's not going to resolve your issue. You can either choose to use those work arounds or just be mad it doesn't work the way you want it to and not do anything about it. Have you even spoke with Garmin Support?  Suggested a different way of it working through the ideas web page - https://www.garmin.com/en-GB/forms/ideas/

  • Hello, I think I didn't complain. I wrote on a forum where are a lot of people, who has similar problem. And maybe someone found a solution for my problem. Maybe I didn't find a setting in the menu.

The other thing is, this feture worked on the previous forerunner, and i could use my watch together my hearing aid, what device is not a free choose thing. I think that's all what I waited for.

Finally thank you for the advise I didn't know that support page before. I'll try it.

  • Your workarounds are a step backwards.

I started the post hoping there was a setting, because that's the real solution.

I disagree this isn't a smart watch. I wear it all the time and having the button to answer a call the way it worked on previous versions is pretty low expectation.

  • You can disagree all you want but the Forerunner watches have always beef a sports watch first  with limited smart features. If you want smart watch features, buy a smart watch with fitness tracking abilities.

  • It has the feature. It has smart watch features. Its priced and marketed as such.

It's the implementation that's broken. This forum has been a way to communicate that to garmin.

Not sure why you keep inserting yourself here given your stance. Move along

  • I agree the current implementation doesn't make any sense.

I had wired headphones on today listening to the radio with my phone in my pocket, not easily accessible.

A call came in and I (stupidly?) pressed the button on the watch to answer the call.  I should have pressed the button on the headphones. Doh!

The caller's voice then came out of the watch which was almost inaudible.

I had to end the call and ring the person back as there was nothing else I could do seemingly.

The watch UI should allow me to take the call either on the phone or the watch - my choice -  unless I'm wearing headphones and then it should only let me take the call on the phone and not the watch.

To me this seems like a common use case, and Garmin did not test it.

Also, this behaviour contradicts what is says in the manual which does not mention that the call will be transferred to the watch:

"When you receive a phone call on your connected phone, the Forerunner® watch displays the name or phone number of the caller.

    • To accept the call, select etc."
  • I see that there is a related implementation already on the watch for spoken alerts.

    It is under GCM -> Settings -> Activities & Apps -> <activity type> - > Audio Output

    And the options are:

    - Watch

    - Connected devices

    - Off

    - Don't change

It would be useful if such options also existed for making/receiving phone calls.
