strobe light question

Hi All,

Is there a way to turn strobe led light on/off during an activity (walk/run) ?

I walk/run 3 hrs daily and I start at 4am which is in complete darkness so I use the strobe, but the last 90 minutes is in day light so I need to turn it off whilst in activity

can it be done ?

Thanks!

  • Create a shortcut to the flashlight. Then use that shortcut to turn off/on.
Or add the flashlight in the controls, then use controls > flashlight.

  • I have no problem with the flashlight, if i double click the light button it goes on and double click again it goes off. the problem is the strobe light, and the question is if there is a way to start the strobe light and switch it off when needed during an activity (walk/run etc.)

  • I ment strobe, add strobe to the controls. Then access it from the controls.

The strobe seems no to be available to add in the shortcuts, it should.

  • That's what I did but unfortunately it looks like another bug to the list of the 970.

when I do what you said and try to switch on the strobe WHILST in a run/walk etc using the method you described above, the light turns on but it does NOT blink even though it says blink on the display. (Garmin take note)

If you stop the run and try to switch on the strobe as you described, then it will blink normally and as it should.

I started to regret my purchase because of the so many bugs in the firmware (6.17) and I believe Garmin should not threat us legitimate customers as beta testers. Another big issue for me is not being able to use google assistant (bug) to control my phone whilst it is strapped to my upper arm during a walk/run

    Thanks

  • Tried to share a video here to show how my the watch behaves, but the forum seems not to allow that.

Anyway, there seems to be some wrong behaviours when settings are changed during activity using the controls. Not only this but also change in sounds (system) that are not stored (already reported to Garmin)

This is the way the strobe works for me:

    – Running an activity with the strobe started from the activity settings:
Using controls > strobe starts and stops the strobe. So okay I would say.
ERROR: However the flashlight will also be turned on (weak) during strobe off.

    – Running an activity without strobe initiated from the activity settings.
ERROR: The strobe cannot be controlled using the controls > strobe.

    GARMIN:
    –  Please have a look at the use case: controlling strobe during activities by controls.
    –  Please add the possibility to choose strobe to the shortcuts.

  • Thanks for your reply,

I fully agree with what you said.

For the time being (and my needs) I had to stop using the watch altogether because of this strobe issue (I run from 4am to daylight somtimes needing the strobe and somtimes not. and for the google assistant, because of the reasons I stated above.

  • Good evening,

I did testing on my own Forerunner 970, it seems that strobe is not an option when starting an activity, only flashlight. You can get to it by the control menu and click on it but nothing will happen except for the solid light (flashlight). However, since it is later in the evening for me, my watch when starting a run alerted me if I wanted strobe to be turned on "after sunset" and I said yes. @MariO - do you remember your watch prompting this for your first run with it? Also if you do go into the run settings and set strobe light for "after sunset" or "on" will it work for you OR not at all? That would be a bug, or are you only wanting it for the morning runs and not all runs you do? So the settings we have don't work for that?

Nevertheless, the strobe from controls should work I would assume but I am happy to look into it!

@hakanwidlund your second point about adding strobe to a short cut, you will need to fill out our ideas page: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/ - thank you so much!

  • Thanks for your reply

there is an option in the run configuration to turn strobe ON which is what I did and the strobe started as soon as I started the run (which I don't like) because I need the strobe 30 minutes after I start the run and turn it off around 70 min into the run because it's daylight by then. sometimes I run for 4 to 5 hrs and it's funny to run with the strobe ON during daylight and it's not healthy for the battery.

If I don't start the strobe in the same time I start the run activity on the watch, then there is no way to turn the strobe ON during the activity.

  • Hello,

I started a run activity and went into the run settings while the activity was going and turned it on 5 minutes after. Then kept the run going for awhile and I was able to turn the strobe off during the activity. I did not have to stop the activity to do this. Now, having a hot key for strobe would be beneficial so you don't have to go through the settings during your run but there is a way for you to use the strobe during your timeframes.

  • hi,

Can you describe the process you did to enable the strobe during a run please ?

    Thanks
