Garmin 970 Crash and Reboot Issues

Yesterday 6/23 my watch rebooted while starting a run activity (warmup) before a 5k. Fortunately it didn't go into crash mode and rebooted without any issues. This gives me some serious anxiety when this type of crash happens before events. I was glad the watch worked fine for the actual race, but some weird power drops with Stryd occurred.

I also had a major triangle of death happen a few weeks ago that was a pain to get back up and running. Now on every power up I receive a backup notice "backup found ready to apply a backup from your Foreruuner 970, created on 9 June at 12:38am". Makes no sense it's continuously asking to backup an old date.

Is it possible I have a bad apple? I still have the option of replacing the watch for a new one. Thoughts?

    It’s definitely a firmware issue on 6.17 .

  • I joined the club too :) Running so far was good. Today’s e-bike saving activity and the watch crashed.

I done a 10k run and the watch crashed when saving activity. It’s not even on Garmin Connect. Watch going back if there’s no update by Saturday. The Garmin engineers have had long enough now to release an update.

  • Answered a call, watch crashed and rebooted. The call had been answered on the phone which was out of reach. Almost missed a courier delivery because of it.

Notably this was the second call I answered on the watch since I got it. Also notably the watch was restarted last night, it wasn't even running for long.

  • Update with the new replacement. So far so good with plenty of different activities logged and no crashes...fingers crossed.

Did you update the firmware to 6.17 as it was then the problems all started.

  • I’m on software version 6.18.  The crashes are intolerable.  Initially it would happen at the end of the activity when saving but now it happens midway through the activity. Crashed once during a tread mill warm up 5 mins into the activity and another time while doing strength training. I have Spotify installed but wasn’t using it. I also have some additional topo active maps installed via Garmin Express but wasn’t using it at the time.

  • If it can help, I had a lot of crashes (5+ per day), they all went away after uninstalling:

    - Spotify and Youtube Music
    - all custom watchfaces

I'm not sure which of them (or maybe both) are the cause, but that's my experience. I'm now on the latest Beta Software which is supposed to have fixed some common crashes as well, so maybe you can try that.

I do plan on reinstalling one of the music apps eventually but for now I'm fine with not using them if everything else works as it should.

  • Wow Thanks It might just have worked. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but removing Spotify did seem to stop the crashes. I've had 2 walking activities. One with mapping enable too just to try and it was able to save it without any issues.

(I was using the stock watch face and had no custom faces)

    Here's what I did.

Removed spotify downloads.. Logged out of Spotify. Uninstalled Spotify. (When using the music tab after uninstallation, it crashed though!).

Synced with Connect IQ store and Garmin Connect.

Switched off and on the 970 and also did a reset (long hold the light button for 30 secs)

Synced to Garmin Express. Here I had 2 minor map updates. Disconnected the 970 and reconnected again to resync.

    Charged to 100%.

Since then no issues. I'm really hoping this works. Having no Spotify is a big bummer but right now I'm just happy it works

  • Sometimes speaker starts buzzing whatever sound is played, needs restart to resolve issue.

Connecting to sony headphones is unstable disconnects, cuts offs, craches smartwatch, needs restart to resolve issue.

Sometimes watch keeps thinking that am not wearing it on my wrist, asks for passcode and stops recording my heart rate, needs restart resolve issue.

Spotify doesn't update my playlists, always fails, needs reinstallation and readding my playlists to resolve issue.
