How to turn off the 'Track Detection' feature?

Hi all,

After my track sessions I usually run barefoot at the football pitch but while all my previous Garmins detected it well the 970 insists that I am running at the track messing up the distance and, consequently, the pace.

Is there any way to avoid this happening?

I always select 'Track Run' for the track sessions and either 'Run' or 'Trail Run' for these barefoot cool down sessions on grass.

Thank you all in advance!

  • On the run profile you are using (not the track profile), scroll down to "Run Settings" and within this menu you will see "Track Detection"

  • Hummmm, not finding this... I've checked the standard 'Run' and also 'Trail Run' profiles and "Track Detection" is not available anywhere....

  • Try this, from the time of day, press the top right button and select run. Within the Run activity landing page, scroll down to run settings and select it. Then scroll down a few times and you should see Track Detection.

  • Thanks. Found on Run but not on Trail Run... Let's see if this affects both...

    Cheers

  • Hi the trail run does not have an option to turn off the track detection. It may sound stupid as usually a track would not be next to a trail but... it would be great to be able to turn off as well I run pass next to one the watch finds the track and messes up my workout distance...

  • If you are able to connect your watch to a PC/Mac, copy a few files off the watch, and post them here, I might be able to help you with that. I have an older watch without this option, so I can't do this myself.

    1. Completely close Garmin Express on your computer. Close the Garmin icon in the system tray / menu, too

    2. If you are on Mac, download and install https://openmtp.ganeshrvel.com/

    3. Plug your watch into your computer using the charging cable

    4. Using File Explorer (Windows) / OpenMTP (Mac), navigate to \GARMIN\SPORTS\ folder on your watch

    5. Copy the following files off your watch onto your computer:

RunningRun.fit [this is the Run profile]

RunningTrackTrack_Run.fit [this is the Track Run profile]

    6. Unplug the watch and let it restart

    7. Rename the copy of RunningRun.fit (on your computer) to a slightly different name, like RunningRun2.fit

    [doesn't matter exactly what]

    8. Toggle the Track Detection option in the Run profile [don't change anything else]. You can change it back afterwards

    9. Repeat steps 3 and 4

    10. Copy \Garmin\sports\RunningRun.fit off your watch again

    11. Compress/ZIP all 3 files (RunningTrackTrack_Run.fit, runningrun.fit, runningrun2.fit) and post them here

If you can do that, I might be able to help you turn off Track Detection. I already have a website which can modify Garmin activity profiles to turn off other settings which can't be disabled on the watch. It would be fairly easy for me to update it, once I have the example FIT files so I can see how the Track Detection option is defined.

I actually already have 2 guesses about how to turn that option off, but I don't want to guess.
