Topoactive Maps

So I just bought my lovely new 970! Since I bought it abroad (USA) I'm now trying to load up the Topoactive maps for Europe (and South Africa and New Zealand - future travel and running plans!)

Tried via the watch on wifi but after a few hours the map downloads seem to just stall.

Tried via Garmin Express and it downloads quick enough, maps install, all seems okay except for one odd thing: on my watch itself, it says "update available" on the EU and SA maps. On Express, no update (expected since I downloaded them today, should be latest). On the watch, I can select to update, but again hours and no real progress. The maps seem to work just fine, don't have this issue on my older FR955, just wondering if there's a minor bug in the 970 maps manager that it's showing maps pending update even when they are already up to date? Minor thing.

Confirmed maps are 2025.10 on my watch

  • Also noticed minor differences between Express and the watch map manager:

    Express:

    • Separate maps for Western, Central, and Eastern Europe
    • Separate maps for Southern Africa and rest of Africa

    Watch:

    • Single map for Europe
    • Single map for continent of Africa

I wonder, could this be the reason for the 'updates' on the watch? Auz/NZ shows up to date and it's a single map in Express and on the watch map manager???

  • I had this; Initially tried adding via WiFi but it was 2% in a hour. Next, Garmin Express, which like for you worked but then showed Update Available on the watch.

I fixed this through some combination of deleting maps from the GE end, restarting watch, doing the update on the watch which I think cleared and then re-added from GE. But I cannot actually remember. It worked eventually.

  • Thank you!

So: deleted from GE, confirmed gone from watch. Restarted watch, synced GE, added back a single map (2025.10, update available), restart watch, update available, queue update from watch, connect GE, no update available but watch still showing update available Disappointed

I wonder if I should just leave it overnight once the battery runs low, let it use wifi???
