Track Detection Setting

I noticed something on the Forerunner 970 that I don’t remember seeing on the 965 under the run activity settings, there’s an option called Track Detection. Does anyone know what this actually does? Does it automatically put you into Track Mode or something?

  • As far as I experienced, if you're on track with 400m and a normal elliptical shape, the watch smooths the GPS so the track nearly overlaps every time, but (at least in my case) there is some deviation.

I was just once on a track with the 970 (so maybe the watch is figuring out the exact shape next time), but when I was, I tracked it in run mode with track detection on.
The strange thing for me, maybe an early bug, was that I started the lap exactly on the line (lane 1) and the distance-based workout kept getting the laps/distance shorter.
*I did 4x1k with 400m rest so 13 laps and in the end it was about 50m short.
Fingers crossed that it's better in the dedicated track mode, or the watch improves itself next time.
