How is navigation/maps performance?

As a person very interested in the forerunner 970 (currently owning the 955 solar) I am wondering how the map performs on this model... This given the increased resolution and detail displayed. Any people who also owned the 955 that compare it to that?

On the 955 it's already... so so. (And I notice a difference in responsiveness when changing detail settings) so a bit afraid about the experience on the 970...

  • btw. even with similar performance to 955: e.g. trail running won't be ideal with OLED because of the gesture delay to wake or (in always on mode) brighten the screen. It's a fraction of a second (?) but might be annoying when running on complex trails. But i am happy to hear real-world-opinions, it's just a guess.

  • Lol, can't imagine that being an issue... I don't run 100km/h or have to make these split second decisions. One could say the added detail would actually help.

Perhaps with mountainbike or something this night be a problem, but not for (my) running

  • So I've just bought the 970 after almost 3 years with the 955 (non-solar). My first ever run was in a city I was not familiar with (on holidays and found my 970 in store, which saved waiting 3-5 weeks for online delivery!), created a quick route and uploaded it.

Now I've been using the maps and route nav since the 935, and found the 955 maps were rather cluttered and "busy". The 970 mapping was a much cleaner experience, easier to read, super responsive. Maybe mostly the fancy amoled screen?? But super impressed. I did my run, didn't get lost, was able to tweak the route on the fly (because in real life detours happen) and easily found my way back on course.

Now I'm back home and will try a route on more familiar roads. Maybe dredge up one I've already done for a better comparison (at home I like the routing feature to plan long runs to the correct distance, and follow the route without having to remember every turn to ensure the planned distance.

Another thing about the 970 - it has an actual speaker, so the little nudges are clearer (have audio and vibrate to alert me to an upcoming turn) - that'll be useful for familiar roads as I tend to go onto autopilot and run too short or too long as a result...

  • interesting, thanks for the insights! I am curious about what you described as "cluttered". Are e.g. less POIs shown or is the color scheme or layout different vs 955 maps screen?

  • By cluttered I just mean that there's too much info on the screen and perhaps the MIP screen isn't ideal for the level of detail available on the maps. Also I found the route line isn't bold enough so when it's a city with loads of roads and turns etc, it can be tough to see exactly where you're meant to turn (especially in an unfamiliar area).

I found the maps on the 970 just so much easier to read. Again could be in large part due to the amoled screen - bright and bold

  • Can you turn off the fields that show up on the left hand side of the 970 during navigation — the expected time of arrival, distance remaining, etc?

  • Thanks! Sounds promising... So you don't find the maps-screen/navigation to be less responsive then the 955?

  • CPU/SoC is the same in all catches models and series since 2021, then do not expect any improvement to GUI responsiveness.

Customers of Fenix 8 confirm this statement.... :-(

  • Not less responsive but much less useful.

Half the map is obscured with fields and turn by turn navigation does not work.

  • I actually find the 970 maps better / easier to use / easier to read than the 955
