Forerunner 970 touch screen issues

My 970 seems to have touch screen input when nothing is touching it. It seems like it is overly sensitive. If I scroll up to view running details, and scroll thru the items there, it gets stuck constantly opening the selected item, and sometimes the screen is slightly scrolling back and forth on its own (screen is shaking).

I notice this when looking at the acute load and load focus screens. It is very repeatable. I'll hit the back button to get out, and it will jump right back into the screen, over and over again. My fingers are nowhere near the center of the screen to possibly touch the screen link. I have to hit the back button quickly, multiple times, to get to the watch face to get it to stop.

Is this a hardware bug? software bug? I didn't have this problem on the Fenix 7s.

  • Sounds like a possible hardware issue. I suggest reaching out to support directly.

  • I get this as well. Ghost touches all the time, always after I pressed START button. Some told me it's a firmware bug but i think it's hardware malfunction. So I sent it back asking for a new one. Waiting for Garmin's answer atm.

  • Hi! I’m having the same issue. I tried rebooting it but still happens.

I reached out to support and sent them videos of the watch malfunctioning with ghost touches. I’m very shock and honestly disappointed with the answer I’ve gotten as it seems they have no idea what’s happening and expect us to wait for them to resolve, whenever they do, with a new brand (very expensive) watch that does not work properly.

    Their answer:
We confirm that we have received the video and images.
As mentioned in our previous email, we've added them to an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this issue.
With the information provided, our engineering team will analyze and conduct tests to reach a resolution.
We cannot provide a timeframe for this process, as it depends on what is discovered during the investigation and what is required to resolve the problem.
We will contact you once it has been reviewed.

  • Have you tried Software Reinstall.  Maybe it does something ...my 965 had an issue after the last FW update with the touchscreen and this helped.

On watch go to Settings > About . Then press light button 8 times . On the menu select software reinstall. It reinstalls the last reinstalled software.

  • Did you update the software on your watch? I don't remember if I had this problem before I ran the update.

  • I tried reinstalling this way but the problem is still there. I noticed it said this update had a touch screen change.

  • Same issue here. Software version 6.16. The watch is unusable for smart watch/phone functions unless I disable the touch screen. The watch will auto answer phone calls that I don't want to answer, reorder activities that I don't want to reorder, dismiss notifications that I don't want to dismiss, and select all sorts of random functions depending on what screen is up. I'm hoping this will get resolved in software. I'm going to open a ticket as well.

  • Yea, software version 6.16 here as well. I'll submit a ticket too.

  • I just reached out to support. They asked me to recreate the issue and upload a short video of it happening. I did and they are sending me a replacement.

  • no worries, this is the standard answer, not just from the support, but in this forum as well.

it is kind of funny (or atrocious) that even when there are tons of posts and comments on a long going critical issue, the support is still able to play the innocent, that they never ever ran into this issue, this was something very new and surprising above all.

    how cute they are ^_^
