Progressive Overload in Gym

I've been using the Garmin Forerunner 965 at the gym for a while and very satisfied so far. A problem I have though is that say I have a target rep range for 10-12 and during the workout I do 13 reps. In the best of worlds the watch would have a function that automatically increases the weight with say 2.5 kg for next session, there by using progressive overload. I find that I log these 13 reps, and next session I have forgotten how many I did and do the same weight as last time, thereby not progressive overloading.

My question: Is there a easy way during a workout to see how many reps you did last workout or is there a way to program the watch to progessivly overload automatically. Is anyone else having this issue?

  • I use a google doc spreadsheet that tracks all my typical lifts and weights.  makes it easy to track long term progress and progression of weights.  I occassionally update my typical programmed workout in garmin to match weights.  so I know what weight without looking at spreadsheet.

I have not found or used a method that utilizes the 'bechmark lifts' in a positive way... like last week I did a PR on shoulder press... not of weight, but of reps.   Managed 3x9reps of 50# dumbbells... didn't trigger a PR, but it was for me, so it would never effect PR or benchmark lifts etc.  BUT, for me that is a sign when I get to 3x8 or 3x9 and can do all three sets, to move up weight.  Which in turn usually drops me to sets of 55# 8,7,6... or similar.

  • Yes I also used to have a spreadsheet in docs and that works wonders. Been trying to stop using the phone in the gym to be more effecient, but if you have the discipline to not get stuck scrolling social media, all to you, but thats not me. Also been trying to use the benchmark version but it doesnt exist for every excersise which makes it kinda useless to me. Its crazy to me that there isnt a function to see on your watch during a session, how you performed last time, its such a easy fix! Thank you for the response though:)

  • Agree, but that is really where pre-programming your workout really helps things.  If you know your target for your typical workout is 3x12 - the only one really that you would want to push past 12 would be the third set.  then you would need/want to go in after and edit your configured workout to raise it by one weight level.  Unless you plan to hold at 3x12 for a week or two before a recovery week.... then edit for the following week.  Can program recovery time to help keep you on track!  :-)

All in all , it is too bad that Garmin hasn't utilized training management.  Sure would be great to say I typically do these these 15 types of lifts throughout the month/season... help manage the training.  So based on recent reps, weights, total load... would progress you along automatically.

Family member works for Lifetime Fitness and she said they have a new App that is Free, that uses AI to do something similar.  Not sure how well it works in practice... but sure sounded promising.
