Cycling ability glance

Today a "Cycling ability" glance appeared on my watch. FW: 26.08. I never had this glance, I haven't upgraded the firmware, haven't ride a bike for more than a week, haven't connected to Garmin Express, don't have a power meter. The only change I made in the past 2 days was related to sleep mode and I bought a Stryd Next Gen foot pod fir running (and paired it)

  • I've had that one since a very long time ago, maybe from the beginning?

But my bikes have power meters... Maybe the styrd triggered it then?

  • Maybe, but it's strange as I searched for it and found that it is only useful for running and not for cycling

You didn't say *how* you paired your Stryd.

All Stryds appear as at least 2 standard types of ANT+ sensors: foot pod and (bike) power meter. Additionally, the new Stryd 5.0 also appears as an RD-Pod. [I am going to ignore bluetooth connections here.]

So there's up to 3 different ways you could've paired your Stryd in the built-in sensors menu, as a standard ANT+ sensor.

If you paired your Stryd as a (bike) power meter, that could explain what you are seeing.

  • Notes:

    - the Stryd Zones CIQ data field, which is required for receiving and recording data from Stryd to be used with the Stryd phone app / PowerCenter, connects to the Stryd in a different way than above (it uses a proprietary ANT+ profile)

    - there is no running power meter standard. All power meters in the built-in sensors menu are bike power meters. (And the ANT+ power meter standard is for bike power meters.)

    - I think the only reason Stryd appears as a cycling power meter is for convenience. For example, this way, other CIQ apps have a way to connect to the Stryd [directly, as an ANT+ bike power meter] and display running power.

    - ofc Stryd Zones doesn't require the watch to be natively paired with Stryd as a bike power meter (or as a foot pod, for that matter)

    - Note that the built-in Power data field (and other native power-related fields) will never use Stryd from a natively paired (cycling) power meter

    - Note that for running activity profiles, CIQ's ActivityInfo.power (and other power-related activity fields) do *not* reflect power from a natively connected cycling power meter. [They used to, but that changed about a year ago.] CIQ data fields used to be able display power from Stryd simply by asking the end user to pair and connect natively with Stryd as a (bike) power meter, and reading the value of ActivityInfo.power. This is no longer possible: now apps must make a direct connection to the Stryd as a bike power meter using Ant.GenericChannel and read the data themselves

  • Ahhh, that is probably what happened (though then the question is why Stryd advertises itself as CYCLICG power meter or why Garmin thinks it is such).
I have it as FP (ANT), PWR (ANT), PRW (BT), RD (ANT). All of them is disabled after pairing, as per the recommendation I read, except the FP (ANT).

So this PWR is probably a cycling power meter then?

  • So this PWR is probably a cycling power meter then?

    Yes

(though then the question is why Stryd advertises itself as CYCLICG power meter or why Garmin thinks it is such).

I already explained above that I think it's solely for convenience. (Meaning that the Stryd sensor was clearly deliberately designed to present itself as a cycling power meter, as a little bonus for end users.)

The Stryd Zones data field itself doesn't use the cycling power "channel" to talk to the Stryd sensor, but a 3rd party (non-Stryd) CIQ app can do so. In fact, any non-Stryd CIQ data field which advertises itself as being compatible with Stryd in running activities must do so.

Ofc you do run the risk of accidentally triggering cycling-specific features, or even recording bad power during a cycling activity by connecting to the Stryd as a power meter via the built-in sensors menu.

I'm not a cyclist - the closest thing I do to cycling is using the stationary bike at the gym. I once wore my Stryd during an indoor cycling activity on a stationary bike. During this time I accidentally had my Stryd paired as "PWR" (cycling power meter) for unrelated testing purposes, so the cycling activity ofc used power data from my Stryd.

Because of this one activity (which was over a year ago), I permanently have (fake) cycling VO2 Max and FTP values on my Garmin. It's kinda funny that they never expire but oh well.

Anyway if you look at the support article for setting up Stryd 5.0, it says to only pair it as an RD-Pod and no other kind of sensor (I'm referring to true native pairings ofc, and not Stryd Zones).

If you have the literal "next-gen" Stryd (which is older than Stryd 5.0) or any Stryd older than 5.0, then you don't have to pair it natively as any sensor at all.

Ofc you always have the option of pairing Stryd as a foot pod, but it's not necessary for using Stryd as a running power meter.
