Battery down from 50% to 4% in 12 hours

The battery in my fr965 (FW 25.04) is down from 50% to 4% in 12 hours (while mostly sleeping, no activity). This never happened to me, usually I get about 5 days from 100%.

I don't know if it's a coincidence but yesterday my kids asked why their watch blinks green and mine red, so I disabled PulseOX entirely (which probably should've increased battery life, or at least not decreased it)

The only other change I made yesterday was to switch from one of the built-in watch faces to BIG EASY, which I user earlier for more than a year. (I changed from BIG EASY to the built-in in hopes of getting significantly more battery life before a 1 week bike tour, but there was no significant change, so now I changed back)

  • A couple of ideas: the software on the watch (a glance or watchface) is using a lot of power (for whatever reason,  reinstall with no extra watchfaces and glances would fix that), Garmin Connect may cause the watch to use BLE more often or at higher power, check for this by turning BLE on the watch off for 24 hour, or the battery has deteriorated and then you're out of luck.

You can check for the amount of error logs in /Garmin/Debug, and if RAM dumps are present there. To do that turn off BLE on the watch and connect it to a PC ot Mac after 24 hours. Many more than 20 error text files is something Garmin should have a look at. A RAM dump is also something for Garmin. BTW this will not catch problems related the BLE stack.

Check the sync log in Connect Mobile, many failed syncs are an issue. Check the queue in Connect Web if there are things queued that won't sync.

Also.make sure all BLE sensors go to sleep after use (should have status Searching or Disconnected)

  • I restarted the watch, and it looks after 24 hours that it's "OK" now.
