Did it again - HR zones jacked up

Z4 is 157-160 bpm.  All other zone ranges are +10 bpm.  This is the second time I've seen Z4 go wonky.

I wonder if it's because I'm bouncing back and forth between my Venu3 and 965.  My Venu3 profile shows Z4 as 85-87%.  Seems really tight.

  • Yes that does seem like its likely part of the problem, do you have maximum HR set manually and the same for both watches?  It is very weird to me that HR/zones/etc are super device dependent, not part of user profile like I feel it should all be.   How are you setting the zones?  By % max HR or Lactate Threshold?  LT is updated automatically... so not a fan of that configuration personally, more of a manually set Max HR... and then set zones to default for the most part based on % Max.  Often I will adjust the aerobic zone2 type HR to a wider range, also lower HR minimum for zone1.    If you set them both to the same... they shouldn't change!?

Do you have one device set as your primary device?  I have my 965 set as mine, with my Edge as 2ndary.  things seem to work out well

  • I think one of the reasons the zones are device-dependent is that the device records the current zones to the activity FIT file, so you can always see the correct zones / time in zones for that activity, even if your zones change in the future.

Ofc that doesn't prevent Garmin from syncing one set of HR zones across all devices for a user's account. But then they would have to deal with things like sport-specific zones existing on some devices and not others.

Not really making excuses for them, but I can see how this might have happened.

It goes back to how you used to be able to configure zones in the Connect website, but for modern devices, if you go to where that page used to be, there's a message telling you to configure the zones in Connect app or on the watch itself. And ofc the Connect app can talk directly to the watch in real time, while the Connect website cannot.
