FR965 Software 23.20 navigation workout flow issue

Hi all,

Since 23.20 I have encountered a workflow issue that I didn't have on 21.22 (this has been confirmed by a colleague who is still on that version.) My watch is the forerunner 965.

My issue:

I'm following one of the coach-plans where activities are being scheduled in my calendar.

When I start such an activity I'm selecting 'Workouts' and then 'Scheduled', select the activity and select 'Do Workout' with activity type 'Run'.

This shows me the Run view with 'wait for GPS' and the three dots. I always use navigation and a pre-defined route for my longer activites so then I click the menu-button and select 'Navigation' and then 'Courses'.

After selecting a course I see the course and select 'Do course'. Here is what has been changed in this update. Because it used to show me the Run view with the three dots so I could start the activity. But now it shows me the Workouts menu. I've tried the following things here:

- clicking the back button, this shows me the same workouts menu (it loops)

- selecting the same workout, wich only gives me the option to 'Cancel workout'

When doing 'Cancel' it reverts back to the course menu. Although there have been some crashes and restarts after doing this! If there is no restart I can start the activity.

The activity is then started but it doesn't show the map view (like it did on 21.22) although I know navigation is working because it is enabled through my airpods.

I'm wondering if there are other users using this flow having issues. And if it could be fixed.

Also after starting this the live view crashed after 10 km(in a course of 17km. The activity did continue and I could save it with all gps data included. I don't know if it's related though.

I have been using this flow since I bought this watch a year ago with now issues (with like a 100+ activities) until this version.

  • I'm on the 24.xx beta and it seems to still work as you setout (original method).

I repeated the exact steps you mentioned and after do course I get the activity screen as you noted and not back to workouts.

Have you tried to do a full shutdown and restart (hold light in until full shutdown, then restart)

Maybe also try try a software reinstall - settings > about  Press light 8 times , select reinstall software.

  • Thank you for your answer. I just tried the shutdown and the issue remains.

Is there someone on 23.20 that can confirm?

What does reinstall software do? Will I lose my settings?

Update: I didn't see your comment about holding the light switch. I just switched off. Using your method causes my emergency contacts to be notified. Is there another way of triggering the full shutdown?

  • Using your method causes my emergency contacts to be notified. Is there another way of triggering the full shutdown?

You have to continue hold the LIGHT button (past the point where emergency contacts would be notified), until the watch shuts down. Yeah, I don't think this is the greatest UX either. (Obviously it's too easy to accidentally trigger emergency assistance when you meant to do a forced shutdown instead.)

Honestly, I don't think there's much difference between doing this kind of forced shutdown (sometimes referred to as a hard reset) and doing the normal shutdown through the UI (sometimes referred to as a soft reset). The main difference is that the forced shutdown will work even if the watch isn't responding (for any reason), and the forced shutdown also has the potential to lose data (where the normal shutdown should not.) This is why some people suggest syncing before you do a forced shutdown.

I'm following one of the coach-plans where activities are being scheduled in my calendar.

When I start such an activity I'm selecting 'Workouts' and then 'Scheduled', select the activity and select 'Do Workout' with activity type 'Run'.

Not that this flow shouldn't work, but another way to do it would be:

    - From the watchface, press START and select Run

    - If you have a scheduled workout, you will be immediately prompted to do the workout, with a menu that has the following choices: Do Workout, View, and Dismiss

    - Select Do Workout

If you decide to dismiss the workout at this point, you won't be prompted again, but there's another way to see any scheduled workouts in the Run activity:

    - From the watchface, press START and select Run

    - Press UP for the menu

    - Select Training

    - Select Training Calendar. Here you will see any scheduled workouts for today

Btw, another way to launch scheduled workouts is to use the calendar glance. If you try this, do you have the same problems that you see with the Workouts app?

  • Keep holding the light in all the way till it shuts down . Don’t let go when the contact thingy comes up .

Software install just reinstall the last software doesn’t  impact data or settings .

done both when had issues and sometimes it helps

  • I've tried your suggestion. I can't do the run->scheduled since I don't have any scheduled workouts today (for some reason). But the other way does bring me back to the Run watchface.

For the other option: I have shut down the device using the light switch. As you expected that didn't fix my initial problem.

Will try the re-install and see if that helps.

Would still be interesting if someone on 23.20 has the same issue.

  • As an update, just asked another colleague who was on version 23.20.

He doesn't have the issue! He did suggest to try and remove some courses if I had a lot. He had a former experience that was caused by this.

Will try that and the re-install.

update: re-install software (8 times light on about) didn't work.

removing some courses didn't work either. I have 58 courses
