probleme allure / Pace issue

Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded from a Garmin Forerunner 945 to the 965, and I’ve noticed a frustrating issue: my pace is very unstable on the 965, even though I’m using the same GPS settings and running in the same environment.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • GPS mode: “All Systems” (also tested “All + Multiband” & GPS Only)

  • Recording set to every second

  • I use instant pace as my primary pace data field

  • I always run with a chest HR strap

  • Firmware is up to date

Despite all this, my pace readings are still jumping all over the place, especially during steady runs. What’s strange is that on my old Forerunner 945, I had much smoother and more consistent pace tracking under the exact same conditions.

It almost feels like the 965 is more reactive in a bad way, or that something is off in the GPS or firmware handling.

Has anyone experienced this?

Any ideas how to fix it or is Garmin aware of this issue?

Thanks in advance!

i have traduced from french. thank you

  • How long does the jumpy pace last? For the entire run or just for the first few minutes?

If it's only for the first few minutes, I would guess that you don't really have a solid GPS fix (even if the watch shows a green ring). I see this all the time on my FR955 (and, to be fair, older Forerunners as well). The green GPS ring often appears very quickly, but in reality, the watch doesn't have a good GPS fix. I can tell because:

    - the instant pace field is fluctuating wildly even though I'm standing still

    - my position on the map is wrong (and changing) even though I'm standing still

If I were to start the activity and run at this point, my pace, distance and GPS track will be incorrect for the first few minutes.

So what I usually do is wait for the instant pace field to settle down to 0:00, after I see the green ring. This can take anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes, for me.

I always run with a chest HR strap

Which chest strap do you use? If it's an HRM-PRO/PRO+, HRM-FIT, or HRM200/600, make sure that it isn't being used as a pace source outdoors. (Open the Sensors menu and look in the settings for your HR strap).

(The newer Garmin chest straps can be used as a pace/distance source, just like a footpod.)

GPS mode: “All Systems” (also tested “All + Multiband” & GPS Only)

I use "All + Multiband" as it's supposed to be the most accurate (although there is a slight battery hit).

Regarding instant pace, I'm fairly sure Garmin uses some kind of fusion of GPS data and accelerometer data (even when you are outdoors with a good GPS fix). This can be seen when I look at Connect activity data on external sites, and the best pace data on the external site -- which is seemingly based only GPS data -- is different (faster) than the best pace data in Connect (which is based on instant pace).

  • Answer to Question 1:

The jumpy pace lasts throughout the entire run. I actually tried your suggestion to wait a bit after the GPS fix before starting the activity, but it didn’t help.

    Answer to Question 2:

I use the HRM Pro+, and I just discovered that it was set as the pace source. I disabled that setting this morning, and my pace instantly became much more stable — it really seems like that was the root cause.

However, the pace is still less stable than on my Forerunner 945. On the 945, I was using the GPS + Galileo mode. It seems like the “All Systems” mode on the 965 relies on more satellite systems than that… a bit strange.

I’ll give it another try soon using the GPS Only mode to compare.

  • When paces/distances seem weird, often on phone apps recording or older apple watches if you zoom into the map of the activity you will notice a lot of zigzags... wanrdering into yards or the woods... cutting corners or being on opposite sidewalks etc.  You noticing that?  Do you often get quite a bit more distance then someone else you are running with?(due to 'wiggle' throughout course)

Never had much for pace issues or GPS issues with mine.  However if you haven't done a hard restart in awhile, I would give that a try.  Quick and easy, hold upper left button for 30-35sec (keep holding through the alert warning) and when screen is full black... release.  Then press again to turn back on.  Sync with watch.

My pace always seems very smooth and mellow.  Plus it shows me very accurately on side of street, etc.

  •  The positionning is very good, no zigzags on the track. I didn’t do a hard reset because the watch was brand new and already updated. It happened during my first runs. Now the pace is a bit more stable since I disabled the pace option from the HRM-Pro+ strap, but it’s still nowhere near as good as my old 945.
