FR965 announcing "approaching point" in my headphones, and no longer displaying Distance To End Of Course.

I use the map function regularly on my FR965. I always have "Turn Notifications" disabled before I "Sent To Device" from Garmin Connect. Until recently, this has been working as expected: no audio announcements, and the screen displays "Distance to end of course" below the map.

On my long run on Friday, this had changed. I am now getting "approaching point" announcements in my headphones, and the screen displays "distance to next point" under the map.

I discovered this at the start of a 6 hour trail run, with no obvious way to disable the audio prompts, or get my Distance To End display back.

The audio prompts are annoying, and I want to see my total distance remaining.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Any ideas how to get back to my desired settings?

  • Update: I've tested this again this morning, with a short course around my local park. It is now working as expected again: no audio annoucements, displaying Distance To End. I'll put it down as a glitch for now...fingers crossed it doesn't turn up again on a long day out

  • 2nd update: it wasn't a glitch - but I've found a workaround.

I'm posting this in case anyone else has the same problem.

Another long run, and again I'm getting "approaching point" in my ears and Distance to End has been replaced with the distance to the next point.

3 hours in to my long run, I worked out what had changed between this and my short test run. The test run was plotted in the Garmin app, but the long run was plotted using OS Maps (i.e Ordnance Survey in the UK) then imported to Garmin.

I've since tried several different methods of getting a Course onto my FR965:

Plot on the OS Maps website -> export GPX -> import GPX into Garmin Connect website -> Send to Device

    or

Plot on the OS Maps website -> export GPX -> copy GPX to my phone -> import GPX into Garmin App -> Send to Device

both cause the annoying audio prompts.

Plot on the Plotaroute website -> export GPX -> import GPX into Garmin Connect website -> Send to Device

Plot on the OS Maps website -> export from the OS App direct to Garmin app -> Send to Device

Both of these work fine, as does plotting direct on the Garmin app or website.

Perhaps OS Maps have changed something about how they export GPX data from their website - or Garmin have changed how they read the OS Maps.

At least I have a workaround for now.

I might be the only person experiencing this, as I'm a dinosaur that still prefers using a mouse/keyboard/big screen/PC over wrestling with a phone or tablet for plotting routes.
