FR965 : "gesture" implementation (turns screen on/off) massively annoying during activities

As already reported a few months ago (discussion is now locked for some reason) the FR965 has a very annoying implementation of the "gesture", flip towards you and it turns on, flip away and it turns off...for "Smart Watch" use it's ok (although unneeded) I suppose but for activities it's a MASSIVE annoyance as any little "bump" will turn off the screen immediately after you've flipped it towards you to turn it on. When you're running this happens all the time and you have to strain to not move your arm. While it's manageable to just view the screen (if you're ready to flip several times to see what you need), forget about doing anything more advanced like changing screens or scrolling the map !

I find it hard to believe that I'm the only one to have a problem with this implementation as it's likely the same on all the "premium" watches ?

Is it really too much to ask for a setting to change the behavior while in activity and just keep the screen on for 4/8/12 seconds like on the lowly Venu 2 ?

  • I don't see this problem at all on my 965. I have my display set to be always on during activities. I guess this hits battery life to a certain degree but that hasn't been a problem for me. Might be different if you're doing ultra endurance activities but, otherwise, maybe that's a solution that could work for you?

  • Yeah I suppose that will make the problem less visible although it will still dim slightly when you hit a "bump"/goes off

Would still be easier to have it behave like the V2 in an activity.

  • Io ho lo stesso identico problema

  • Hopefully Garmin will listen!

Probably a 5 minute fix if Garmin bothered...I'm guessing the "Forerunner team" never had  that problem with MIPS screens and they didn't think it through when OLED screens were implemented...unlike the Venu team that was always OLED.

  • I'm guessing the "Forerunner team" never had  that problem with MIPS screens and they didn't think it through when OLED screens were implemented.

But on MIP watches (like Forerunner 955), the gesture only ever turns the backlight on, not off.

So it seems like this behaviour where the gesture turns the screen both on *and* off is a new thing for AMOLED Forerunners. If I had to guess, they're trying to aggressively save battery. Battery life is probably more of a concern for FR965 (marketed for triathlon use) as opposed to Venu (a "lifestyle" watch).

  • Interesting thoughts, I wasn't thinking "backlight" but now that you mention it, I didn't have that problem with the 935 or 955 indeed.

The only current "fix" for that problem is to activate AOD and that's going to be even worse for battery life than having an 4/8/15 time-out. Besides it's not much of a fix because the display still dims after 4/8/15 seconds.

Would it really kill them to replace Gesture : on/off by Gesture Screen On : on/off and Gesture Screen Off : on/off?
