965 Spotify Music Sync Failed Wifi

As per title, having problems with syncing music from Spotify on Forerunner 965 using home wifi.

Can get a sync to start (most of the time) but generally gets stuck at 3-4% and sits there for ages before saying “Music Sync Failed”. Doesn’t matter how big the playlists are, can be one song or 50. If I keep going through that cycle I can eventually add maybe 10 songs onto the watch in an hour, not a particularly streamlined or enjoyable process though and not something I’d expect from this technology in 2025.

Have been having these issues for the last few months irrespective of software and updates, and have tried all the workarounds I’ve seen documented here and across other sites. 

I’ve tried resetting the watch entirely, signing out of Spotify and deleting/reinstalling the app, charging watch fully before attempting sync, putting it as close to the router as possible, removing all other devices from the wifi network while syncing, modifying security settings for the wifi network etc.

It’s really disappointing to have these ongoing problems detracting from the enjoyment of this watch during activities. The fact this issue has popped up time and time again over the years for many people on many different devices is also sad to see.

Appreciate any advice or suggestions to solve this!

  • Hi - i understand your frustration - I experienced this with my FR965.  The problem arose completely unexpectedly one day, the sync process always having worked perfectly prior.  To cut a long story short, I found the solution by chance - I simply changed the WiFi security protocol in the WiFi router network settings.  I can’t remember exactly which protocol I chose, but I just swapped it randomly from one to another in the drop down options list in the router and the sync process has always progressed normally since.  Hope you find a solution soon.

    I have tried this already, but thought I'd give it another shot since you suggested it. I changed WiFi security from WPA2 PSK to WPA+WPA2 PSK (which I believe is a weaker security setting) but unfortunately had no success with this.

    I then enabled the guest 2.4GHz WiFI, thinking that since the 965 would be the only device on that network it couldn't have issues relating to traffic, but alas still no good outcome, reached only 8% sync. I then modified the security on the guest network and tried again, with no luck, getting to 13% sync (only after about 10 minutes).

    While doing this I had the watch directly next to the modem, charged to 100% and plugged in to a charger at the time. I tried the same thing with it not charging, but this made no difference.

    I'm going to make a post on Spotify support and see if they're more helpful than Garmin seem to be with this ongoing problem that is clearly affecting many people.
