Using an Edge 840 and a Forerunner 965 for cycling

I have recently got a Forerunner 965 and am going out tomorrow for my first cycle with it. I have a Garmin Edge 840 that will be connected to my Garmin Dual HRM and all the other cycling sensors. I was going to record the ride on the Edge and just wear the Forerunner without starting an activity so that Garmin Connect would not have duplicate activities. Would this work ok or would I have dodgy HR readings in Connect due to the Forerunner not being in activity mode, I did a turbo ride today and noticed that although I was wearing the HRM that the 965 was showing a lower HR reading from the Forerunner. Sorry if that sounds confusing, I'm just trying to work out what combination of the Garmin devices works the best to get the correct results on Connect. Thanks for your help.

  • It should work. I do the same with Edge Explore 2, that even doesn't have some features that the 840 has.

  • Thanks for the info. I realised the turbo ride HR was wrong because I wasn't recording the activity on any Garmin device, the data came from Zwift. To combat this in future I will start an activity on the Forerunner, Indoor Cycling, and that will then use the HRM HR data rather than the Forerunner wrist HR which is a bit off during activity if no activity is being recorded. Fingers crossed it works the way I think it will.

  • Why on the forerunner? Just connect the HRM to the edge840, record the proper activity type (mountain bike or road bike) on the edge. You can even remove the forerunner and leave it at home.

At the end you sync the activity to Garmin connect and you should be able to see that it's used to adjust all the metrics, as if you recorded it on the watch.

You might want to read about primary training device vs primary wearable and physio trueup

  • I have a similar 'issue' working out on Zwift indoors. I have my HRM Pro Plus connected to Zwift. I manually put my watch on broadcast HR it than connects to the HRM showing identical metrics. Without having to start an activity in the 965.

  • I don't use the 840 on the turbo, but the Forerunner is on my wrist anyway. Turned out I could start an activity and then discard it at the end and the correct external HRM readings are now in Garmin Connect. I have read on the primary training device/primary wearable and have the Forerunner set as both as suggested in the article.

  • Good to know that this is another workaround for the issue.
