Auto sync over wifi not working

Hi,

my forerunner does no auto-sync data over wifi, wifi networks are saved, option to auto-sync is enabled, but no data appear on garmin connect web like stress, sleep and other data until I go in the watch to wifi settings and manually hit "sync now", then all data appear on garmin connect web. Is any way to fix this, my firmware is 23.20?

  • I'm not sure, but think auto sync is only for activities?

  • Up for now on the garmin connect web on the "Devices & Sync Status" I had:

    Forerunner 965
    Last synced 15/05/25 at 18:30

Then on the watch I did manual wifi sync with success.

After that on garmin connect web I have:

    Forerunner 965
    Last synced Today at 10:41

And all my data from last night like sleep stress, hrv and other appear.

That is, only activities are automatically transferred, and manually transferred everything? after all, it is strange!

  • I think so yes. That's actually the way I prefer it, to have control over when and what I sync, so I have not investigated further...

  • Auto-sync for wifi only happens once after an activity is completed (some say that the watch will try to sync for up to 30 minutes after an activity, if it's initially unable to connect to a known wi-fi network).

This means that after you complete an activity, you have to get in range of a known wi-fi network within a certain period of time if you want auto-sync to work.

Afaik it's done this way to save battery life.

I think that auto sync for wi-fi will still sync everything, but it only *happens* after an activity. That's what I've based on my testing anyway.

I go in the watch to wifi settings and manually hit "sync now",

A faster way to do this is to use the sync icon in the controls menu (hold LIGHT).

If bluetooth is disabled (or your phone is not connected), the sync will automatically use wi-fi.

If your phone is connected via bluetooth, the sync will initially use bluetooth, but you can press a button (or swipe) as per the on-screen prompt, to make it use wi-fi.

  • So is any way this will be change in the future?  Why not give the user the choice of autosynchronization in the background at a time interval. I user my watch as only health monitor and don't do any acitivities on it, I also do not connect watch to the phone, so my health data are not synced unless manually Disappointed

@FlowState thanks for the hint. I created button shortcut with direct goto wifi, some solution but I would prefer this done automatically.

I have send feature request to Garmin, to have them add wifi synchronization on a user-set time interval, and I keep my fingers crossed that they listen to their users.

  • I'm guessing it won't change. I would guess your use case might be atypical (especially as a Forerunner user).

Garmin sports/lifestyle watches typically revolve around recording timed activities. (Garmin also has fitbit-style activity trackers, but that's a different class of product.)

I guess ppl might start to use Garmin watches differently as they gain more smartwatch features.

I feel like the way you use your watch is more like how people use a fitbit or apple watch, but that's not how Garmin watches were historically used. (Activity recording came first, and all the smartwatch and health stuff came later.) Things change ofc, but Garmin sticks to a lot of old design decisions for many years after they're no longer relevant.

But even in your case, Garmin probably just expects you to sync regularly with your phone. (After all, smartwatch features typically require a paired phone.)

So you might be the rare user who doesn't use their Garmin primarily for recording activities or as a smartwatch, but only for health stuff.
