965 programmed workout displayed dfferently in garmin connect to the same programmed workout workout uploaded from 945

Has anyone seen similar the following

After upgrading to from the 945 to the 965 and transerffing all my PRE PROGRAMMED workouts i noticed the following.

In this particular workout, which is basically 1 km reps,  ( but where you do the first 500m a bit easier then increase pace for the second 500m).  I programmed a 500m split followed by another 500m split then a 90 second rest. When done on the 945 and uplloaded it  to Garmin Connect it gives me the total km time plus the two 500m splits .. as seen in the first picture .

When done on the 965 it just gives me the two 500m splits but not the total 1 km time (see second picture ). I guess technically the 965 is uploeading exactly what was programmed , but it was a nice fearture in the 945 that now seems to be gone.

Does anyone know why this is a happening, or how to create the work out so it does it the way the 945 worked... or is this a change on garmin connect.

Needless to say when i rang Garmin support they had no idea.

  • Can you screenshot the workout setup?

  • Honestly it looks like a bug to me. The screenshot for the 945 activity looks like it has "intervals" (sets) numbered and grouped correctly, while the screenshot for 965 looks like the "intervals" (sets) are numbered wrong and they're not grouped at all.

I suspect it has something to do with the fact that you have two consecutive run steps in a repeat, and Garmin is handling that differently now compared to before.

I created a very similar workout to yours, went through on my FR955 it by just using the LAP button to skip through all the steps, and I got basically the same (incorrect) results as you, both on the watch and in Connect.

I will say that when you edit intervals manually (by assigning interval types to every lap) or when Garmin tries to categorize intervals automatically (based on the user pressing the LAP button to separate periods of high and low intensity), Garmin typically groups sets based on alternating work and rest/recovery intervals. Afaik I know, with *those* kinds of interval categorization, only alternating work and reset/recovery periods are supported. For example, if you didn't follow a programmed workout, but you just did the same workout manually by pressing the LAP button after every step, Garmin would probably be unable to figure out how to group your sets properly. Same if you tried to edit your intervals after the fact.

iow, it seems Garmin knows how to group sets for an activity that looks like this:

    - warmup (lap 1)
    - run (lap 2)
    - recover (lap 3)
    - run (lap 4)
    - recover (lap 5)
    - cooldown (lap 6)

In this case, Garmin will probably group the intervals as follows:

    interval 1: warmup (lap 1)
    interval 2:
      run (lap 2)
      recover (lap 3)
    interval 3:
      run (lap 4)
      recover (lap 5)
    interval 4:
      cooldown (lap 6)

    or

    interval 1: warmup (lap 1)
    interval 2:
      run (lap 2)
      recover (lap 3)
    interval 3:
      run (lap 4)
      recover (lap 5)
      recover (lap 6)

But it seems that Garmin can't handle the following type of activity anymore, when it comes to interval set grouping (either automatic or when the user edits intervals automatically):

    run
    run
    recover

    run
    run
    recover

Every time Garmin sees a new run "step", it thinks it's a new set, which is why it groups those steps like this

    interval 1: run
    interval 2:
      run
      recover
    interval 3: run
    interval 4:
      run
      recover

Yeah, it's ridiculous because the original workout has all the information Garmin needs and clearly it was able to do this properly in the past (for 945).

I can only speculate that the auto-interval categorization feature may still be active during a programmed workout, and it may be this feature which is interfering with the intervals that are in the workout itself. But then again FR945 supports the feature.

Or maybe it's just a new bug idk.

  • You could always contact [email protected] or https://support.garmin.com/, but I think it will be extremely hard to explain this issue to them, and even harder to convince them that it's a real problem (as opposed to working by design.)

  • As another example, I created the following workout:

    Repeat 3 times:
      - 1k run
      - 0:01 recovery
      - 1k run
      - 1:30 recovery

You would expect this to show up as 3 "intervals" (sets) in Connect:

    Interval 1:
      run
      recovery
      run
      recovery
    Interval 2:
      run
      recovery
      run
      recovery
    Interval 3:
      run
      recovery
      run
      recovery

But due to this bug, it shows up as 6 intervals:

    Interval 1:
      run
      recovery
    Interval 2:
      run
      recovery
    Interval 3:
      run
      recovery
    Interval 4:
      run
      recovery
    Interval 5:
      run
      recovery
    Interval 6:
      run
      recovery

TL;DR I think Garmin just assumes every "interval" (set) consists of a single run step and optional recovery step now.
