Run race start sequence

Hello.  I'm curious about the best sequence to use when starting a running race.  Last weekend I ran a 5k.  Prior to the race, I set up a "training & planning>workouts" for a 5k race with distance and goal pace.  I like seeing the pace gauge at the top of my watch while running.  When I got to the starting area, I was wondering when to start navigating to the workout.  I was at the starting area about 8 or 10 minutes prior to start.  I was thinking, what if I navigate to the workout and am all ready to hit start...is there a screen saver type thing that brings the watch back to the "home" screen?  So, worried about the watch timing out and going to the home screen, I hit start, then stop really quickly, thinking it would stay on that screen until start time and I would simply hit start when I crossed the line.  It did, this worked, but, the watch included the few minutes of waiting to start in the elapsed time.  So, I'm just wondering what's the best thing to do, and when is the right time to do it?  Do you have a preference in how you set up prior to a race, and which buttons do you press in the starting area, and when do you press them?  Thanx so much!

  • Do you have the Power Save time out in the activity set to Extended ?

  • To extend the answer a little: This is what 965 manual says about the timeout: "Power Save Timeout: Sets the power-save timeout length for how long your watch stays in training mode, for example, when you are waiting for a race to start. The Normal option sets the watch to enter low-power watch mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. The Extended option sets the watch to enter low-power watch mode after 25 minutes of inactivity. The extended mode can result in shorter battery life between charges."

  • As Bitti and S.M.R. stated: Just change Power Save Time Out in the run settings (press middle left button) to "extended", call up the run activity screen up to 25 minutes before the start of the race without starting/stopping - so you can turn tracking on exactly at the moment when you actually cross the starting line. Works perfectly for me.
