V02 Max, Crazy Increase?

I haven’t ran since mid January 25, I have been cycling a lot, I recorded a 5km walk yesterday on my 965, today I looked at my watch and my running V02 max has shot from 41 to 45, is the 965 worth the hassle anymore, between the bugs and connect asking me to sign up to connect +, is it coming to the end of the road with Garmin, sad really, was great at one time

Any ideas what’s going on?

  • If your bike doesn't have a power meter, it doesn't provide VO2max. Both running and walking do, but walking VO2max estimate is considered less reliable, so it's not used by the watch if there's a running VO2max less than a month old.

So what happened is that your running VO2max estimate was too old, and was replaced by the less reliable walking estimate. If you can do another run, its estimate will again become the one used.

  • agree with Bitti, it is doing what it should... just at the merci of estimating.  Especially with walking, such a low level effort is tricky, but if it was a long steady effort... and assuming yo8u have accurate resting and max HR... i guess it would be 'guessable' how fit someone is based on their HR while walking.   Of course the vo2 results hinge on good data... was the HR reading accurate and good/smooth looking?  Is your weight and maximum HR set correctly (not estimated!).

  • happened to me when the wrist HR just did what it used to do and provided unrealistic low HR for half an hour - of course my VO2max skyrocketed to the stratosphere

  • Weight is right, I would say my MHR is there an there about correct, didn’t think walking contributed to V02 max
