High wrist-based HR AFTER activities Forerunner 965 21.22

Hi Garmin Community,

Today I noticed something strange — the optical heart rate sensor was showing a much higher heart rate than usual. For example, while walking to my workout, I checked my pulse — the optical sensor showed around 100 bpm. Then I connected my chest strap, and it showed 70 bpm. I thought, okay, maybe just a small difference.

I finished my workout and walked home at a normal pace. Later at home, I noticed that the recorded heart rate during the walk back was unusually high and didn’t match how I actually felt.

Screenshot 1 – Abnormal heart rate:
This shows the issue — an unusually high heart rate recorded while walking calmly after the workout.

Screenshot 2 – Normal heart rate (for comparison):
This is from a similar walk on a previous day, where the heart rate looks normal and realistic.

Between the workouts, I didn’t update the watch software, but there was an update for the Garmin Connect app. I understand this most likely doesn’t affect the issue — just mentioning it for clarity.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue recently?

Thanks!

  • If you have your chest strap connected to your phone, and if your screenshots are coming from the Connect app, it's possible the strap is sending erroneous data to Connect for a bit after you take it off.

I was experiencing this have since unpaired my HRM Pro+ from my phone and no longer receive the erroneous data.

  • Thanks for the reply! Yes, I know that after removing the sensor it continues to record data for a while. But I usually run only with the strap and the watch, then just walk home, and I take the strap off only when I’m back. In any case, this specific issue happened to me for the first time. For now, I’ve just updated the firmware to the latest version and will monitor it. If it happens again, I’ll come back here with more detailed information.

  • i had little different problem with strap and watch. i got a lot of drop outs.than someone here in forum suggested, to turn off source switching. and it looks that helped me.

  • Oh, I have this problem too here :)

  • don't worry, garmin's wrist HR data sometimes does exactly like that. this issue now at least is 2 years old, and gradually infected all watches.

after FW updates it used to be sometimes better, sometimes worst, depending on the actual superposition of Saturn and the Jupiter.

basically they try to finetune this, yet nowadays all effort goes into introducing new critical bugs into all sort of garmin devices (such as edge computers do not booting up at all), and garmin is very good in this task considering the bricked garmin devices all around.
