Execution Score seems out of sync with Training Effect scores

I've been running with my 965 since June 2023 and have been very satisfied with it.

Today's suggested run was an anaerobic effort. Specifically: Start with a 15-minute warmup at 129 beats per minute. Followed by 8 one-minute efforts at 7:30 pace with three minutes rest in between. Followed by a 15-minute cool down at 129 beats per minute. Predicted benefit was 3.0 aerobic training effect and 3.0 anaerobic training effect.

I did the run on flat ground with no curves. The wrist-based heart rate displayed for all segments seemed accurate. My heart rate zones are set up using the default zones.

At the end of the run, the watch displayed an execution score of 60%. I thought, well, OK, so I was a little slower on some of the repeats than the watch asked for. I was shocked when I looked at my training effect scores. I got a 3.2 aerobic training effect and a 3.7 anaerobic training effect. I earned an exercise load of 257 for the workout.

To me, the training effect scores seem in line with the exercise load score. But the execution score seems low considering that I got training effect scores above what was predicted for the workout. Can anyone offer some insights on this situation?

  • Was it a HR or pace based workout?

Look at the HR or pace chart on Connect and see how many times your HR / Pace (whichever relevant) was above or below that target line.

That may give an indication of where the issue is.

If its Anaerobic and HR based, its very difficult to get the score IMHO as the HR take too long to ramp in shorter intervals , even a minute and I think that affects the execution score.

So I think one calculation may be based more on averages and the othere on absolutes so to say.

I've found similar issues myself , If I'm very diligent on an easy run I can get close to 100%.

I now use a setting of HR based for easy runs (it seems easier to keep it in line than using pace) and Pace for intervals , tempo etc.

  • I have found I can execute the work fairly well... but still get a VERY low execution score.  I think often it has to do with the warmup/recovieries/cooldown as well.  I have given up in even looking at it.   Would be interested in testing it on a bike indoor workout where my power is controlled by the smart trainer.... so execution is pretty much spot on.

  • FYI, I've found that if I create my own workout, the watch gives me a very high score for it. Perhaps this is because I specify a fairly wide HR range.

  • I agree with you on all points.

I note that in Connect, the charts with workout targets only have a single line indicating the target pace or HR. As the workouts allow a user to have a range of pace or HR (for my HR it is often +/- 7), I think it would be better if the charts had a target range rather than just a single line. This would be along the line of what displays for HRV Baseline screen. Have suggested this to Garmin via their website, but as you can see, they have not seen fit to make the change. If you agree with this suggestion, perhaps you could put in something similar and additional requests might provide some additional umph to get them to make the change.
