Running power alerts during workout

I've just started a Garmin coach running plan. Ideally, I would like to use running power for this, rather than HR or pace, but it is not supported. Also, custom alerts don't work during coach workout, so I can't use those.

Is there any  way that I can get running power high/low alerts during these workouts - CIQ perhaps?

Thanks

  • The good news is this kind of thing is def possible in Connect IQ. (I assume you mean native running power, as opposed to power from Stryd, although either it would be possible for either one.)

The bad news is the only current CIQ data field app I could find which supports static running power alerts (as opposed to alerts based on structured workout data) is not free.

It's a actually a set of data fields called Datarun Next Generation (I think it's just 4 copies of the same field, so you can have multiple settings/screens): https://apps.garmin.com/developer/5ef65748-5d04-471c-8866-dae6891ce48a/apps

The fields will work in a limited mode if you don't pay -- I haven't tried it out the free mode, so I don't know if it would be too limited/annoying for practical use or not.

It does look like the static power alert feature allows you to set just one range for the entire activity (as opposed to different ranges for every lap/workout step).

Probably be best to try out the free version and see if it meets your needs.

I used to have my own CIQ data field which allowed you to set different static power alerts per lap/workout step, but I haven't updated it in years :/, so it's not available for FR965. If you're curious, here it is: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/a054f515-576a-4a28-b8e5-87987ba737e1

  • Thanks very much for the help and links. I did find your data field when I searched around.

I will take a look at Datarun Next Generation.

  • All four DRNG fields are identical, they're just for different settings.

In DRNG, as FlowState correctly described, you can only set a static range to receive a warning (vibration or vibration + warning tone) if you go outside of that range. Of course, this doesn't work for intervals or similar things.

  • Thanks for the reply. Can you just confirm that it'll  work with native Garmin running power. I did try a demo version earlier and most of the power setting seemed Stryd related and I didn't get any alerts when I set a static range.

  • Have you updated your FR965 firmware within the past 6 months or so?

Last year, Garmin made a change which allows CIQ apps to access native running power. Without that change, no CIQ app can support native running power. But afaik, all of the currently supported watches with latest firmware (including FR965) should have this change. (Stryd users have been complaining about it because it breaks some CIQ apps for Stryd use.)

  • Yes, I have the latest firmware and I'm on the beta program. I do have a stryd also, but I'm trying to use Garmin power for the convenience.

  • Hmm.

You can double-check whether your watch supports native running power in CIQ apps:

    1) Download the AppBuilder 5 data field: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/fd690281-9c22-4fee-a81e-3b7f39aa67c5

    2) Use the following settings:

Label: ciq power (or whatever you want)

    Formula: power

    Display Format: Auto

    3) Install the field in a running activity (like Run)

    4) Put the native Power field next to the Appbuilder 5 field

Go for a run with native running power enabled: AppBuilder 5 and the native power field should display the same value.

  • Thanks for the detailed instructions - but I'll try the stryd id first as I'm pretty sure that I left it blank. Maybe have a jog around the house!

Yeah, sorry I think the thing I said about setting the stryd id to 0 applies to a different CIQ data field haha.

The manual does imply that power will normally be read from the CIQ API instead of directly from Stryd, if the ANT+ ID is left blank, meaning that it should support native running power afaik.

  • Hi ceejay, I can confirm this for the FR965 (firmware 22.24). If you don't set an ANT ID or set an incorrect one in DRNG, the native power will be used for all calculations.
